Every one of these means someone’s evening or workday got interrupted so our volunteers could turn out, day or night, rain or shine. Thanks as always to our crew and to their employers and families who make it possible for them to respond.

If you’ve ever thought about joining, now’s a good time to ask, we’re always keen to hear from people interested in giving back to their community.

With a long weekend ahead, the team at Gore Volunteer Fire Brigade wants to see everyone home safely. A few reminders as you head out on the roads:

🚨Take it slow – winter conditions mean ice, fog, and reduced visibility, especially early morning and evening.

🚨 Plan for extra travel time and avoid rushing.

🚨 Buckle up, every trip, every seat.

🚨 Never drink and drive – plan a sober driver or call a ride.

🚨 Watch for stock trucks and farm traffic on rural roads.

Enjoy the time with whānau and friends this Matariki. Stay warm, stay safe, and we’ll see you on the other side of the long weekend.

🚒 50 YEARS OF SERVICE – Congratulations Brian Anderson! 🚒

This week we're celebrating something truly special, Brian Anderson has reached an incredible 50 years with the Gore Volunteer Fire Brigade!

Brian joined the brigade back in 1976 in his 20s, and five decades on he's still showing up, still serving, and still putting the community first. That's half a century of training nights, callouts, and turning out, rain, hail, or shine – for the people of Gore.

Beyond the front line, Brian's also been a quiet driving force behind the scenes, helping run Firewise programmes and passing on his knowledge to upskill the next generation. Investing in our young people and fire safety education is just as much a part of his legacy as the callouts themselves.

Brian's also always made sure families and partners feel welcome and valued as part of the brigade whānau, understanding that the support behind the scenes matters just as much as the work out front.

Milestones like this don't come around often, and they don't happen without an enormous amount of dedication, sacrifice, and heart. On behalf of the whole brigade, thank you, Brian, for everything you've given to this team and to our community over the last 50 years.

On Tuesday night, our crew got stuck into some valuable upskilling with a tanker fire response scenario.

The callout: a fully loaded tanker had crashed with the driver unconscious on scene. Our response covered two priorities – a rapid rescue of the driver, and securing the scene to contain and suppress the fire at safe distances, keeping both the public and our own members protected throughout.

A ground monitor was established to maintain a safe standoff from any flammable liquids onboard, and all operations were carried out with a focus on crew safety from the ground up.

Due to the current frosts in the area, training was conducted with uncharged hoses to avoid creating any additional slip hazards on the road surface – a practical call that reflects the real-world thinking our crew brings to every drill.

🧡 National Volunteer Week | Looking After Our Own

This week we’re recognising the incredible people who give their time, skills, and energy to keep our community safe – our volunteers.

Last night, our team took a moment to step back from the gear and the callouts to focus on something just as important – themselves. We were joined by Kris Kennett, Wellbeing Advisor for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, who led our volunteers through a session on recognising and supporting their own wellbeing.

Volunteering is rewarding, but it can also be tough. Our people turn up at some of life’s hardest moments, and it’s vital they have the tools and support to look after their mental health – not just the community’s safety.

We’re proud of a crew that shows up for others, and equally proud to see them show up for each other.

Thank you to Kris for your time and expertise – it was a session that really resonated.

Last month our crews attended a number of motor vehicle accidents – a reminder that the colder months bring slippery roads and tricky conditions for everyone. So while our community was rugged up indoors, our volunteers were out sharpening their motor vehicle rescue skills and tactics. If you or someone you know ever finds themselves in an unfortunate situation on the road, you can rest assured our crews are trained and ready to help.

Our crew responded to 23 callouts throughout May — here’s what we attended:

🚑 4 medical assists

Every single one answered by volunteers. That’s what community looks like.

A huge congratulations to QFF Guy Michaels on successfully completing the Sky Tower Challenge!

Guy has represented the Gore Volunteer Fire Brigade with determination and commitment, and we couldn’t be more proud.
