What have our Visionwest kaimahi and community been up to in preparation for the Long Walk Home on October 10th World Homeless Day? 👀

Back in July, we welcomed an incredible team of kaimahi to the Visionwest whānau as Counties Manukau. Formerly known as Iosis, the Manurewa-based team has been uplifting community since 2006. They bring with them a commitment to embodying kaupapa Māori and honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a strong Baptist whakapapa, and a longstanding focus on supporting whānau facing hardship, trauma, or complex challenges.

When home care works well, the whole health system works better.

This was the case made by the Home and Community Health Association (HCHA) 2026 Manifesto, ‘Home Care: The Beating Heart of the Health System’, presented at Parliament last week.

Murray Penman, Director of Health Services at Visionwest and HCHA Chairperson, spoke to why this matters for the sector:
“When people receive the right support in their own homes, they stay independent for longer. They avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. They recover faster from illness and injury. Their whānau are better supported. Their connection to community remains strong.”

The Manifesto sets out a bold proposition: home care is the smartest investment Government can make on behalf of taxpayers. It calls for home and community care to be recognised as a first line service – not a downstream option – and for urgent investment to be made in technology and training, to better support the 26,000 kaiāwhina and support workers already delivering this care across the motu.

We’re grateful to the HCHA Board for convening this important conversation on the future of our care, and proud to see Murray representing Visionwest in this significant moment for home care in Aotearoa. Ka rawe!

And... that's a wrap on our Crock Pot Cooking Series!

Our Money Mentors and Whai Manaaki Kai services hosted two days of workshops where whānau got the chance to learn easy and wallet-friendly Crock Pot recipes, practise meal planning within their budgets, and kōrero together over kai.

Just like kai, knowledge is better when shared.

A local student recently asked if he could sleep in his school's sick bay.
When teachers asked why, his answer was heartbreaking: he only had one blanket at home and was unable to sleep because of the cold.

Thanks to a generous donation from Intellium Technology, we were able to provide warm bedding for his family, along with many other families over the cold winter.

Lynette from the Visionwest Housing team was thrilled to be able to use these funds to purchase trolley after trolley filled to the brim with warm blankets, each one bringing comfort and hope to local whānau.
