Landslides can happen quickly, and without warning, even after the heavy rain has passed.

Please stay vigilant and watch for the natural warning signs, as you'll need to act quickly if you see them:
- Small slips, rock falls, and sinking land, at the bottom of slopes.
- Sticking doors and window frames, which may mean the land is slowly moving under the building.
- Gaps where window frames are not fitting properly.
- Steps, decks, and verandas, moving or tilting away from the rest of the building.
- New cracks or bulges on the ground, road, footpath, retaining walls and other hard surfaces.
- Tilting trees, retaining walls, or fences.

Get out of the path of the landslide quickly. Evacuate if the building you are in is in danger.

Connection is just a knock away! There's plenty of ways to connect with your neighbours this month, but we can make it even easier with Neighbourhood Support's 3 Ways to Connect!

- Introduce yourself and start a conversation with your neighbours.

- Organize a community event, like a BBQ or game night, to bring everyone together.

- Check in on your neighbours, especially the elderly or those who may be isolated, and offer your support

Let's build a stronger, more supportive community, one connection at a time!

Planning on heading to the beach over the summer? 🏖️

No matter where you are this summer you can check out our tsunami evacuation zones map and make sure you have a plan if you’re heading away or staying at home. https://getready.govt.nz/emergency/tsunami/tsunami-evacuation-zones

Know the signs of a tsunami! 🌊

✔️ If an earthquake is Long or Strong, Get Gone. All our coasts are at risk, even lakes can have tsunamis!
✔️ First: Drop, Cover, Hold during the shaking. Make sure to protect yourself and those around you from the earthquake first.
✔️ Then: Move to high ground or as far inland as possible out of all tsunami zones, don’t wait for an alert.

Paying attention to natural warning signs helps keep us safe in an emergency!

***A State of Emergency has now been declared in Canterbury, with particular regard for tomorrow's winds. Please be careful and stay home tomorrow if you are able.***

22/10/2025

❗Get ready for high winds❗

🔴Dangerous winds are expected tomorrow in the Wellington and Canterbury regions. MetService has issued Red Warnings from tomorrow morning.

🔴Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause flying objects.

🔴Avoid any not essential travel in affected areas and take extreme caution when walking outside or driving.

🔴Fire and firework bans are in place in parts of the country in preparation for Thursdays weather event. Find out more https://ow.ly/KUrG50XfYii

To prepare your home for strong winds:

🔴Bring inside or tie down anything that can be broken or picked up by strong winds, such as outdoor furniture.

🔴If you have a trampoline, turn it upside down to minimise the surface area exposed to wind.

🔴Remove any debris or loose items from around your property. Branches and firewood may become missiles in strong winds.

🔴Bring pets indoors. They can be unsettled by storms and it is more comforting and safer for them to be with you.

🔴Identify a safe location in your whare/home for household members to gather during a storm. This should be a place away from windows, skylights, or glass doors, which can be broken by strong winds or hail and cause damage or injury.

🔴Keep materials at hand for repairing windows, such as tarpaulins, boards and duct tape.
