We’ve launched new online tools to help you explore the climate-related hazards that could affect our district over time 🌧️🌊🔥

You can find information about flooding, rising groundwater, coastal erosion, landslides, wildfire, heat and wind, and explore an interactive map showing where these hazards could occur.

It’s part of our first district-wide Climate Change Risk Assessment, which is helping us understand the risks to the roads, pipes, parks and other Council assets and services our communities rely on.

The information isn’t an assessment of individual properties - it’s designed to help us better understand the bigger picture and prepare for the future.

There is a lot on the news about the giant El Nino weather pattern that is having quite an impact on world weather. It may be an interesting spring summer because so much is changing in our weather systems because the planet overall is heating up.

🔥 El Niño has crossed the +2.0°C mark in the Niño 3.4 region, and one question keeps coming up: "Does that mean it's about to get warmer?"

Not so fast.

The recent cold weather and South Island snow have been driven by a run of chilly southwesterly winds, in large part because of El Niño. But while El Niño is an important climate driver, it's only one piece of the puzzle.

Factors like marine heatwaves around New Zealand, the Southern Annular Mode, the Indian Ocean Dipole, local geography, and even the changing seasons all influence our temperatures.

As we head deeper into spring, milder conditions are becoming more likely. But when it comes to summer, it's still too early to say exactly how warm or cool it will be (compared to normal).
