Come and unpack some mugs with us! 😎
The SoTM shop volunteers unpacked a delivery of handmade mugs last week.
Made by local potter Lynda Harris - each mug is hand thrown and painted. Lynda creates portraits of the different species on the Island and sometimes the landscape and structures such as the lighthouse. Each one is unique and a little functional piece of art.

Our BIRDS IN THE BUSH booklet is now available to purchase online as well as on Island. 🐦

This booklet is intended as a guide for day visitors to Tiritiri Matangi Island to help with species identification and learning their names in Te Reo Māori & English.
There are also some images of the land which show the progress made by volunteer planting of the 80s & 90s.

It is 25 pages, light-weight and a handy size- easy to pull out of a pack or jacket pocket.

Winter in Aotearoa - perfect sock weather 🥶
These are made from a merino blend which will keep you warm & comfy in cooler weather and cool & dry in warmer weather.
The best part however are the designs! Three different pairs which colourfully illustrate the flora and fauna on Tiritiri Matangi Island:

The huia is a treasured and sacred wattle bird with distinctive white tipped tail feathers. The species became extinct around the early 1900s but lives on in our cultural memory. The plight of the huia serves as a reminder of how important it is to protect te taiao | the natural world.

This design honours the huia in a Māori toi | art style, in gold or silver.
The Kōuma breastplate shape acts as a shield; representing strength & resilience.
Jewellery designed by Little Taonga & Art by Greg Ashwell, Kaikōura.

Some special pottery pieces have arrived at the shop!
These are handmade by local potters in Whangaparāoa - just over the sea from Tiritiri Matangi Island. 🫶
There are birds that can be hung on the wall; the tūī, kererū and tārapuka (black-billed gull).
As well as bowls imprinted with leaves and Tiritiri Matangi written inside.
Each piece is beautifully unique - dm for enquiries 🤩
