🍃 The Spring 2026 round of the Breathing Space City programme has come to a successful close, providing two human rights defenders with a temporary space for rest, reflection, and international solidarity.

Even though they were not able to be public while in Oslo due to the challenging security contexts back home, they connected with civil society organisations, participated in a range of activities, and met with the Mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe. They also enjoyed the beauty of the Norwegian spring, took part in cultural and free time activities, and focused on recovering.

🫶🏽 Temporary relocation programmes provide human rights defenders with a valuable opportunity to rest, recover, build networks, and continue their important work.

While the spring round has concluded, two new human rights defenders have already arrived in Oslo for the autumn round. We look forward to continuing this important work.

We are very happy about the news that the Rafto Award 2026 is awarded to the Cuerpo Colegiado de Guardianes del Atrato - a group of indigenous and afrodescendant leaders from Colombia who legally represent and protect the Atrato River.🏆

The NHRF are proud to have supported the work of the implementation of the historic ruling from 2016 which grants legal rights to the Atrato river in Chocó, and recognizes that that the rights of the indigenous and afrodescendant communities of the Atrato region to a healthy environment, to water, to physical and cultural survival, to a life of dignity, to prior consultation and territorial autonomy had been violated.

Det er med stor sorg at vi har mottatt nyheten om Hans Majestet Kong Harald Vs bortgang.

Kong Harald vil bli husket for sitt sterke engasjement for menneskeverd, fellesskap og respekt for alle mennesker. Han var en samlende skikkelse, og verdiene han sto for vil fortsatt være til inspirasjon i arbeidet for et samfunn der alle møtes med likeverd og respekt.

Vi minnes ham med takknemlighet og sender våre varme tanker til kongefamilien og alle som stå igjen i sorg.

It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the passing of His Majesty King Harald V.

King Harald will be remembered for his strong commitment to human dignity, community and respect for all people. He was a unifying figure, and the values he stood for will continue to inspire our work towards a society where everyone is treated with equality and respect.

We will remember him with gratitude and send our thoughts to the Royal Family and all those who are mourning his loss.

I en tid der demokrati, menneskerettigheter og rettsstat er under press, er det viktigere enn noen gang å holde fast ved menneskerettighetene som et grunnleggende premiss for norsk utviklingssamarbeid. Rettigheter er ikke bare et mål i seg selv, men en forutsetning for bærekraftig utvikling, demokrati og sterke sivilsamfunn.
Nettopp derfor må menneskerettighetsperspektivet stå sentralt også i arbeidet med Prosjekt Vendepunkt.

As our interns complete their time with us, we would like to take a moment to express our sincere appreciation for their incredible contributions to the NHRF🌼

Gumi has contributed with remarkable skill across several areas of our work, quickly grasping complex issues and thematics. She has contributed to our MELD team through survey design, reporting and imagining new ways to share knowledge and learning between partners alongside GDPR work and research for program work.

Fernanda has been a wonderful addition to the Breathing Space City programme and our Communications work, bringing creativity and care into everything she does, while thoughtfully following up with our guests and helping ensure their experience is both restful and inspiring.

Norsk senter for menneskerettigheter - Norwegian Centre for Human Rights

Since 2019, we have collaborated with our grantee partner Contec - Consultoría Técnica Comunitaria AC, a civil society organisation that promotes community-based rural economies and strengthens governance in Indigenous communities and forest ejidos in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Protecting indigenous communities and the natural areas they call home is in humanity’s common interest. 🌎
