What is Dutch food? 👀

This is a question that Anas Chao has been asking himself since moving to the Netherlands in 2021. It led him on an 18-month journey of workshops, shared meals, interviews, and archival research, resulting in the exhibition Going Dutch.

The Netherlands has shaped other cuisines through centuries of trade and agricultural dominance, while migrants continuously reshape the Dutch food scene by adapting traditional dishes to available ingredients.
In such recycling of cultures, can we truly define a dish as Dutch? And can we achieve Dutchness through this process?

The exhibition showcases three distinct textile and ceramic installations, exploring the historic development and contemporary ingredients that make up the foodways of the Netherlands. Come find out how Anas unpacks his research on food and identity negotiation through his works.

Join us on November 14 for the opening of Going Dutch De Fabriek Eindhoven . Works will be on show until November 22 (closed between November 16–18).

In conversation with Kexin Hao 郝可欣 Hussein Shikha and Tyson Goudsmits

Let us celebrate the closing of the Ripple Effects exhibition by exploring a dialogue on collective memory, structures of power, visual traditions and inner worlds.

The residents will discuss how they experienced their residency period De Fabriek Eindhoven . Kexin, Hussein and Tyson will take you through their inspiration, research and broader artistic practice. From cultural memory to digital archiving and organisational structures, the artists will give insight to their projects. 👯

Starting at 19:00, the event will also feature with an opening performance by Kexin Hao 🔥 followed by a collective conversation.

During his residency period Tyson explores the making of meaning and the tension between collective and individual memory.

A space is created within a space like reality is recreated within our experiences. A non-identical copy reflecting an internal interpretation of reality, shaped by the artist as a structure of burnt wood within the space. Fire destroys and liberates, erases the past and opens up space for new meaning. Just as fire forms the origin of human technology and imagination, this ancient dream remains visible in the structures we create.

Ripple Effects; Residency Talks | October 2nd | 19:00 hrs 🔔

During his residency at DeFabriek, .shikha develops a new body of work: Jacquard-woven tapestries, video displays, and interactive game segments working across Mesopotamian and Islamic visual traditions.

In this installation, video displays sit alongside the tapestries, where symbols cluster together and trigger dormant memories and narratives in new ways. The same symbols move between thread, pixel, and code. When drawing on symbols from these traditions arranged as mnemonic constellations, clusters emerge in a way where the work activates a memory rather than explaining it.  The Jacquard loom’s punched-card system is a direct ancestor of computing. Through this work Hussein explores what happens when you take that seriously;
when a carpet becomes a game level and when weaving and code share the same underlying logic 👀

During the residency, brings together her ongoing interests in propaganda, the body at work, and the entanglement of the human body and external structures of power, contextualised within the history of .

De Fabriek historically mass-produced prints and later was squatted by artists out of a struggle for space. This active site embodies a tension between institutional production and grassroots resistance. But what if De Fabriek were a living body?

Borrowing from traditions of anatomical drawing, Kexin creates speculative anatomical studies of the building in relation to its past as a printing factory, revealing how industrial space can be read as a corporeal and intimate system shaped by labour. Through combining drawing and live performance the artist in residence explores the machinery behind propaganda alongside the human labour that sustained it, the body working next to the machine, and the relationship between machine, organ, and organisation.

Ripple Effects: Kexin Hao, Hussein Shikha, Tyson Goudsmits

With the second edition of the Ripple Effects Residency, our artists in residence Kexin Hao 郝可欣 Hussein Shikha and Tyson Goudsmits work towards developing pieces in relation to the space of the DeFabriek, to Eindhoven and its surroundings. The narrative of the works relate to collective memory, propaganda, visual traditions and inner worlds, where,

Kexin Hao; presents a reflection of her interest in the human body in relation to collective memory and political propaganda.

Hussain Shikha; presents an exploration of Mesopotamian and Islamic visual traditions through tapestries, moving images and an interactive game.

Tyson Goudsmits; presents an installation reflecting the play between external and internal experiences.

WITTH?: Chapter Five 🖐️

Public Programme in transit;
Last week, on June 18th, the WITTH (WITTH? = Why is this Turban Here?) research community gathered together at De Fabriek Eindhoven to share ongoing research directions & material explorations.

The investigation of non-Western ethnic wear into Dutch carnival as costumes is alive & active.

Oriented in the fishbowl discussion technique, we began with and Bhavneet Kaur , introducing the curatorial common grounds. From personal is political to post-colonial perceptions of Dutch Carnaval spaces, they hold ground on the project premise.🔔

Followed by Laura Viltoft , whose inquiry asks,
How can costumes enhance a feeling of an exceptional time or self & support a person in a party / celebratory setting?
Adding instant joy in the room with the tailor-made headwear for Rosa, Yoran & Mankirat, aligned with their party personalities. 👯

Next, and talked about mis-translations in generational narratives of costume traditions. A speech-to-text algorithm model is under construction (de)/mystifying the meanings lost in essential conversations and intercultural education. 👀

leads us to a think along about precedents which find space for emptiness/absence of culture and grief arising from (white) Dutch tendencies of mocking and fetishising other cultures. 💭

A hearty meal is the core of south-asian hospitality, & the WITTH public programme is no different. Home-made Daal by the amazing Halar along with some Kebabs & Samosas were the perfect recharge for the second half of the event.🤤💪

In perfect seagway, SAMKA HOUSE re-contextualises the turban as a curatorial structure & method?. Mankirat Kaur , finding herself positioned as the Turban itself, outside the context, looks inwards as a narrative critic while Bhavneet Kaur spatialises them into the exhibition design. 🤝
