Normally the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to organs such as the brain, kidneys, muscles, and lungs.
In heart failure, the heart becomes too weak or too stiff, so circulation becomes inefficient.

What happens inside the body
1. The heart muscle becomes weak or damaged.
2. Blood pumping ability decreases.
3. Blood may back up in the lungs or body.
4. Fluid builds up causing swelling and breathing problems.

This is why heart failure is sometimes called congestive heart failure (CHF) because fluid congestion develops in organs.
