The 52nd session of The Global Fund board meeting ended on Friday, 22nd November 2024, with leaders reflecting on the Global Fund's impact in the fight against Malaria, Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/ AIDS in Malawi and the world. The State President, His Excellence Dr. Lazarus MacCathy Chakwera, presided over the event at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

During the event, different local and international organizations showcased interventions being implemented in Malawi courtesy of The Global Fund. World Vision as the Principal Recipient (PR) of the grant from 2021 to 2024 showcased different interventions implemented under different grant sub-recipients.

The interventions include Adolescent Girls and Young Women, HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and Key Populations.

In 2023 alone, close to 2 million people were protected from malaria in the three districts of Mangochi, Balaka and Machinga through Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) intervention.

We also have seen an improvement in Tuberculosis (TB) case detection and improvement in treatment adherence. And a reduction in new HIV infections among key population groups and their partners among others.

We believe through this partnership, World Vision and other partner organizations will contribute to the achievement of the elimination of HIV transmission by 2030.

Madalo, 16, not her real name, from Mulanje district was forced into prostitution to support her family. Due to poverty, Madalo could not get basic support from her parents. Madalo was then forced to start staying with her grandmother who was also struggling to survive. After seeing how her granny was struggling, Madalo opted into prostitution. The money realised was used to support herself, her granny and her parents.

‘I felt too young to go through all that, I was hurt physically and psychologically. The trauma was too much on me’, narrates Madalo.

Through the Rapid Response Committee, Madalo was rescued from s*x work. Madalo went through counseling and she is now catching up with life. She is in secondary school and she is progressing well. Her ambition is to become a nurse.

Since 2021, World Vision Malawi, a Principal Recipient (PR) of The Global Fund Project partnered with Girls Empowerment Network, Pakachere Institute for Health and Development Communication, ActionAid Malawi, and Plan International Malawi as Sub Recipients (SRs) to implement Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) program in four impact districts of Balaka, Chikwawa, Mulanje, and Thyolo.

Among others, the project has empowered community structures such as rapid response committees and hotspot owners to identify, report, and follow Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases to completion. A total of 128 GBV cases were recorded and followed up to completion by community structures.

World Vision has partnered with Ntcheu district council in a clean-up campaign taking place in Ntcheu district.

As one way of tackling diarrhea and other sanitation-related diseases among children and others, World Vision has led the citizens in sweeping Mtonda Market and Mtonda Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority Phambala in the district.

Ntonda Zone Primary Education Advisor, Elina Zalira, says the initiative is crucial in making the school environment habitable.

With support from World Vision, the campaign will also migrate to Traditional Authority Ganya in the district where World Vision Malawi is implementing various developmental interventions.

This clean-up campaign is implemented under our Water Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH, interventions in the district as part of the Sanitation Week celebration.

As we reflect on the progress made since the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, we are also reminded of the work that remains. From tackling child hunger and exploitation to ensuring every child has access to education, healthcare, and protection, the journey ahead requires all of us to act.

💡 Let this day inspire us to take action! Together, we can create a world where every child can live with dignity, safety, and hope.

Children in Southern Africa, particularly girls, face significant barriers to accessing their rights, with challenges such as climate change, economic hardship, and rising debt worsening their situation. These factors lead to gaps in education and overall well-being. A recent UNICEF survey of over 5,000 children highlighted that while 87% of respondents are aware of their rights, issues like school fees, lack of learning materials, inadequate sanitation, and gender-based vulnerabilities continue to prevent progress. Girls, in particular, are often more affected by these barriers due to cultural norms, early marriage, and limited access to education and healthcare.
