Staying properly hydrated is an important part of preparing for any dive, whether you're scuba diving or freediving.

Good hydration supports your body's normal physiological functions and helps you stay ready for underwater activity.

But remember: more isn't always better. The goal is proper hydration, not overhydration.

“𝘞𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘺𝘦𝘵. 𝘞𝘦’𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.”

In May 2026, five men were found alive deep inside a flooded mine in Laos. Getting them out would take teamwork, persistence and difficult decisions in extremely confined passages.

Writing for Alert Diver, Mikko Paasi looks back at the rescue and the years of exploration, training and local relationships that helped make it possible. DAN Europe supported the international response.

You can have plenty of oxygen and still feel like you're suffocating.

Carbon dioxide plays a central role in controlling respiration. When CO₂ accumulates in the bloodstream, it can trigger intense air hunger, anxiety, and potentially dangerous reactions underwater.

This condition is known as hypercapnia.

But why does diving make CO₂ accumulation particularly dangerous?

Explore the science in the first instalment of our Alert Diver series.

𝙁𝙄𝙏 𝙏𝙊 𝘿𝙄𝙑𝙀. 𝘽𝙐𝙏 𝙍𝙀𝘼𝘿𝙔 𝙏𝙊 𝘿𝙄𝙑𝙀?

Being medically fit, properly trained, and experienced doesn't automatically mean you're ready for every dive.

Fatigue, stress, unfamiliar equipment, and changing conditions can all affect your ability to dive safely

The question isn't simply whether you're qualified.

It's whether you're prepared for this particular dive, today.

When we saw a significant increase in the number of diving emergencies handled by our hotline last year compared to 2024, along with the rise in complex and costly evacuations, we wondered whether the number of hyperbaric chambers accepting divers in need was changing.

It appears to be more closely related to recent travel trends among scuba divers. 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗻 dived into the data and the latest travel trends with the team of DAN Europe case managers to find out.

Peer pressure in diving isn't always obvious.

Sometimes it's the fear of disappointing your team, missing a rare opportunity, or admitting you're uncomfortable.

Creating a safer diving culture means making sure every diver feels free to call a dive, without having to justify their decision.

Overconfidence can be a hidden hazard in diving.

But is the famous Dunning-Kruger effect really what we think it is?

Tim Blömeke challenges some common assumptions about confidence, competence, and the psychology behind our decisions underwater.

WHY WOULD A DIVER GET LOST?

It can happen for many reasons — currents, weather, technical problems, emergencies or simply surfacing far from the boat or shore.

Understanding how and why it happens can help divers prepare for it.
