Dakar is calling.

From 15 to 18 June, the will convene clinicians, partners, and global health actors working on neonatal care across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The NEST Partners Meeting brings together those involved in neonatal care to align on what is actually happening on the ground. At the core is South–South exchange: hospitals, teams, and institutions facing similar challenges sharing solutions, aligning approaches, and learning directly from each other. The goal is clear—reduce fragmentation, strengthen coordination, and turn commitments into concrete, shared actions. Less piloting. More scaling what works—together.

The conversation will focus on key priorities—from managing respiratory distress in newborns to using data to improve quality of care, while keeping the experience of families at the centre.

Four days of dialogue, alignment, and shared learning to translate experience into action.

More soon from Dakar.

Last week, the Paolo Chiesi Foundation took part in the 2026 in Copenhagen, joining a global community of philanthropic actors working to rethink how we respond to today’s interconnected challenges.

This year’s edition, centered on people and planet, offered a timely opportunity to reflect on the role of philanthropy in enabling just and equitable transitions, while strengthening resilience and shared prosperity in a rapidly changing world.

A clear message emerged throughout the Forum: environmental, social, and health challenges cannot be addressed in silos. We need to move from analysis to action—accelerate implementation and turn collective knowledge into concrete, scalable impact.

This dialogue reaffirmed a principle that guides our work in global health: impact is shaped not only by what we do but also by how we do it—through collaboration, systemic thinking, and consistent alignment among ambition, responsibility, and long-term sustainability.

We thank Philea for bringing together such a focused and action-oriented exchange within the philanthropic community.

Last week in Geneva, the 79th brought renewed focus on accelerating progress in maternal and newborn health, with global partners aligning on how to move faster from evidence to impact.

Key discussions converged around the same message. In “Investing in Safer Births: Scaling What Works,” organized by Laerdal Global Health and the Global Financing Facility, speakers highlighted the urgent need to expand proven interventions. Similarly, the Devex event “Accelerating Reduction of Maternal, Newborn and Child Mortality: Progress to Date and Action for 2030,” organized with MSD for Mothers and global partners and focused on reducing maternal and child mortality, reinforced this perspective.

A clear message emerged throughout the week. Sustainable change depends not only on clinical interventions but also on stronger health systems, quality of care, local leadership, skilled health workers, and long-term partnerships.

These priorities continue to highlight the importance of integrated, locally driven approaches to neonatal care, capable of strengthening systems while delivering measurable results.

The path is clear. What’s needed now is faster, coordinated action to ensure every mother and every newborn can access quality care, everywhere.

🧑⚕️ In , Dr. Jesús Humberto Espinoza Joya Centeno, pulmonologist, describes the daily challenges of caring for people with . Many patients face limited access to diagnostic tools, long waiting times, and treatments that are often out of reach for those with fewer resources.

🤝 Through the implementation of the Model in Peru, in collaboration with the Policlínico SANTA RITA, healthcare professionals are strengthening the way chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and are diagnosed and managed. Access to basic tests like makes it possible to identify conditions earlier and guide appropriate treatment.

🫁 Improving means improving quality of life. When symptoms are better controlled, people can return to daily activities, remain economically active, and take part fully in their communities—showing how health is closely linked to social and economic development.

Last Sunday, at the American Thoracic Society 2026 Conference, the Paolo Chiesi Foundation hosted a session focused on strengthening the workforce in resource‑constrained settings.

Chaired by Alessandra Folcio and Mario Scuri, the session brought together experiences from different contexts, showing how training, research, and partnerships can translate into more accessible respiratory care.

Dr. Waleema Bacchus-Ali shared how decentralizing services and training clinicians in satellite centers is expanding access to specialist care in Guyana. Prof. Refiloe Masekela highlighted lessons from the Pan African Thoracic Society MECOR program, showing how building research capacity enables locally driven, evidence‑based solutions across Africa.

Dr. Crystal North, together with Dr. Nuwagira Edwin and Dr. Anacret Byamukama, presented a bilateral partnership model—implemented in Uganda—integrating research, education, medical innovation, and community care.

Together, these experiences reinforced a shared message: investing in people through practical training, capacity, and collaboration is key to building a resilient respiratory care workforce and improving patient outcomes where resources are most limited.

👶 Every two seconds, a baby is born prematurely. For too many of them, the first days of life are also the most fragile.

🤱 On , we highlight how simple, proven practices like can make a life‑saving difference. At the Ngozi Regional Hospital in , continuous skin‑to‑skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding, and the active involvement of families are helping premature newborns grow stronger, support brain development, and build a vital bond from the very first moments of life.

🏥 Through the implementation, neonatal care is becoming more family‑centred and effective. By training health professionals, improving neonatal units, and aligning evidence‑based practices with local realities, the model strengthens both the quality of care and the role of families throughout the entire care pathway.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 In the Kangaroo Care Unit, around twenty each month begin their recovery in hospital and continue it at home, with parents empowered as primary caregivers. A concrete reminder that quality starts with families—and extends beyond hospital walls into the community.
