We are pleased to announce a new funded project:
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲: “𝐒𝐖𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐃: 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬”
Funding body: INTERREG NEXT MED 2021–2027 Programme (Specific Objective 2.3 – Access to water and sustainable water management).
Funding Amount: the total budget is 2.745.200,00 €, co-financing by the EU (89%) for 2.443.228 €.

The project addresses one of the Mediterranean’s most pressing challenges: water scarcity caused by climate change, drought, and population growth, which threatens both ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

SWAMED aims to co-design a water monitoring and management system for irrigated agriculture, adaptable to local conditions through a multi-stakeholder approach. The system will be tested in four pilot sites located in Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece, engaging farmers, water authorities, and research institutions.

The initiative is coordinated by:

• The British University in Egypt (Egypt) 🇪🇬
• Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης (AUTH) (Greece) 🇬🇷
Associated partners include the Alanya District Directorate of Agriculture (Turkey) 🇹🇷 and الصفحة الرسمية للمدرسة العليا للمهندسين بمجاز الباب ESI Medjez El Bab (Tunisia).

Main Activities and Expected Outcomes:
SWAMED will deliver:
• A Decision Support System (DSS) for efficient irrigation;
• Pilot implementation and testing in four countries;
• Training and stakeholder engagement through surveys, workshops, and focus groups;
• Communication outputs including videos and outreach materials;
• A sustainability and exploitation plan for future adoption and scaling up.

The Lead Partner, the University of Campania ‘Luigi Vanvitelli’ Italy 🇮🇹 welcomes partners from Tunisia 🇹🇳 , Egypt 🇪🇬 , Greece 🇬🇷 and Turkey 🇹🇷 to kick off the work. Through technical sessions, strategic planning and a dash of local culture, we are building the future of cooperation in the MED area.
