🌍 Tackling Water Scarcity in Mediterranean Rice Cultivation! 🌾💧
We are proud to share that partners from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) successfully represented the project at the CIGR-EurAgEng 2026 Conference on "Emerging Technology and Innovation in Biosystems," held at the prestigious Polytechnic of Turin, Italy!
In the Mediterranean, water scarcity is one of the most critical threats facing agriculture—especially water-intensive crop sectors like rice production.
To address this, the SWAMED team presented our latest study: "Sustainable Water Management for Smart Agriculture in Rice Cultivation in Mediterranean Regions."
What makes our approach unique? Rather than developing technology in a vacuum, we are co-designing our water monitoring and management systems using a multi-stakeholder participatory framework. By actively collaborating with:

• 🔬 Researchers & Tech Innovators..we ensure that the smart farming solutions we build are not only innovative but also highly practical, sustainable, and tailored to real-world local needs.

SWAMED’s innovation is coming to Egypt! 🌱🚁

The SWAMED project is getting into full swing with its field activities in Al Beheira, aiming to revolutionise irrigation for key crops such as potatoes, artichokes, strawberries and oranges.

We are looking for a Local Expert in Land and Water Management based in Al Beheira or Alexandria to closely oversee the installation of our smart technologies, support local farmers and promote the transition to efficient and sustainable agriculture.

We are thrilled to share that the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) represented the project at the 31st Agrotica, Southeastern Europe’s premier agricultural fair, which welcomed over 150,000 visitors in Thessaloniki, Greece!
During the prestigious 11th Panhellenic Agrotica Conference, our team presented SWAMED’s cutting-edge framework designed to transform sustainable rice cultivation:
• 🛰️ IoT Sensor Systems for real-time field monitoring.
• 🛸 UAVs (Drones) to capture high-resolution crop data.
• 📊 Decision Support Systems (DSS) to empower farmers with data-driven insights.
• 💧 Alternative Wetting and Drying (AWD) practices to dramatically optimize water use.
Through these smart agriculture innovations, SWAMED is paving the way for water-resilient, highly productive rice farming in the Mediterranean.

🌊 Digital innovation meets sustainability to conserve water in the Mediterranean.

From the Medjerda Valley to the Axios Delta, the SWAMED project is transforming irrigation management through the power of data and technology. 🛰️🌱

Our Decision Support System (DSS) combines IoT sensors in the soil, satellite data and drone surveys to monitor soil conditions, water quality and crop health in real time. Thanks to its integration with weather forecasts, the system recommends the exact amount of water required, eliminating waste and protecting our ecosystems.

💡 Technology alone is not enough: through our training courses held across Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey, we support farmers, technicians and local authorities in adopting the WEFE Nexus (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem) approach.
