Language is a crucial tool for and exchange 💬

Our partner in Spain, Open Cultural Center - OCC, makes learning accessible and useful to newcomers. Through the CREATE project, they deliver tailored A1 Spanish courses to unaccompanied minors in Barcelona.

Lessons are designed to be interactive and enjoyable, combining classroom work with workshops and excursions tailored to the interests and needs of the young people taking part.

Here is what some of our CREATE had to say about why they want to learn Spanish, and what they enjoy about it.

Conversational fluency arrives in about two years. The academic language a teenager needs to actually learn in a new school takes far longer.

That gap is where migrant and refugee students are quietly lost, and it is why after-school language provision matters long after a student starts sounding fluent.

Our partner Generation for Change CY has written about what three rounds of the CREATE language school in Cyprus have shown about closing it.

🇨🇾 In Cyprus, our partner Generation for Change CY is running the CREATE Summer Greek Language School for migrant and refugee teenagers.

29 students joined this summer's cohort, strengthening their Greek through in-person A1 and A2 classes alongside summer activities, excursions, and community-building experiences.

As the course reaches its final week, participants are preparing for their language assessment and the certificates that follow. We look forward to celebrating their achievements with them.

Generation for Change CY extends sincere thanks to Coca-Cola HBC Cyprus for generously providing refreshments to participants, and gratefully acknowledges UNHCR Cyprus for donating learning supplies that contributed to a positive and enriching learning environment throughout the program.

The CREATE project is co-funded by the European Union through the AMIF program.

📚 Da Napoli, un aggiornamento dal progetto CREATE!

In questi mesi stiamo utilizzando in classe i primi due libri realizzati nell’ambito del progetto Create - Creativity in Education for 2nd Language Learning Funded by EU.

We held an art therapy workshop in Barcelona with the young people who attend our Spanish classes, led by Rachel, a professional art therapist.

Using the word “passion” as a prompt, we explored what connects each participant to their history, emotions, and identity. Through art and words, profound references emerged to cultural roots, music, soccer, family ties, and the idea of home 🏠

The result was a collective experience of expression and listening, in which each person was able to represent their “passion” as a symbolic place of belonging and memory.

These kinds of spaces remind us of the importance of integrating the emotional, cultural, and creative aspects of education and support. A simple yet deeply meaningful encounter. 🎨

Thank you to Rachel and our CREATE teacher Esthefania for hosting the workshop.

Our CREATE classes offer Spanish language education to non-accompanied minors. Together with our partners – Glossomatheia Language Learning & Research Center, Faros, Croix-Rouge française, G.F.C. Generation for Change CY , OXFAM Italia , Dedalus Cooperativa sociale - we support over 600 young people across Europe in learning the language of their new country and fostering inclusion through education.

These trips are made possible through the CREATE project, co-funded by the European Union through the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.
