United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) is the first-ever UN permanent logistics base, established in 1994. It provides critical geospatial, information, telecommunications and supply chain support as well as other enabling specialist services such as training, conference management and occupational safety and health to the UN Secretariat and to UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes worldwide. part of the Office of Supply Chain Management, a partner of the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), and the operational arm of the Department of Operational Support (DOS) of the UN, UNGSC enables its clients and partners to fulfill their mandates by providing comprehensive effective, efficient, and responsible supply chain and technology solutions to make a lasting impact.

Connecting Future Leaders with UN Operations

Today, the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) welcomed a delegation of students from Luiss Guido Carli's Master's Programme in Cooperation and Security, accompanied by a representative of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies ( ), for a visit to the Centre in Brindisi.

The programme included an overview of the services UNGSC provides to the UN Secretariat, and beyond. Participants were introduced to a range of capabilities, including the 3R (Return, Refurbishment and Reuse) Programme, centralized warehousing and distribution activities, environmental solutions, and geospatial and telecommunications services.

For future professionals in international affairs, the visit provided a closer look at a side of the United Nations that is often less visible than diplomacy and policymaking: the operational, technical, and logistical capabilities that enable mandates around the world.

Building Responsible AI Capabilities Across UNGSC

Artificial Intelligence is already reshaping how information is analysed, decisions are supported, and services are delivered. Building the skills to use these tools responsibly is becoming increasingly important.

Over two days, colleagues in Brindisi and Valencia came together for the 2026 Co-Creation Workshop, connecting both duty stations through a shared learning environment focused on the practical application of approved AI tools.

The workshop explored how artificial intelligence can support everyday work across a range of functions, while reinforcing the importance of human judgement, accountability, critical thinking, and responsible use.
Sessions covered use cases already emerging across , including project support, information management, geospatial analysis, and decision-support applications. Discussions also focused on the governance, approved toolsets, and cross-functional collaboration required to translate experimentation into operational value and enable responsible adoption at scale.
More than a training opportunity, AI4AII continues to strengthen connections across duty stations and functional areas, creating opportunities to share experiences, exchange practical solutions, and learn from emerging applications across the Centre.

Strengthening AU–UN Partnerships

From 1 to 6 June 2026, the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) welcomed a delegation from the African Union Commission ( ) and the United Nations Office to the African Union ( ) to Brindisi for a focused working visit.
The programme combined strategic dialogue with direct exposure to UNGSC’s integrated service model — connecting supply chain, infrastructure, environmental solutions, and digital technologies within a single operational framework.

Reflecting on the visit, Col. Mohamed Nassim Boughlali, Peace Support Operations Division, African Union Commission, noted:
“The visit served as an important opportunity to deepen institutional dialogue and promote mutual learning with the United Nations on mission support and logistics management.”

This engagement reinforces a shared objective: strengthening institutional capacity for peace support operations through structured cooperation, technical alignment, and knowledge exchange.
As operational demands evolve, partnerships grounded in practical expertise remain central to delivering effective and sustainable mission support.

What does peacekeeping look like through the lens of technology?

At the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) in Brindisi, the Robotics Competition brought together students from Puglia, offering a practical introduction to how technology supports United Nations operations in the field. The same initiative will also take place at UNGSC’s Valencia base on 11 June, where students from the local community will be welcomed in the same spirit of engagement and learning.
Organized in the framework of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers—observed this year under the theme “Invest in Peace”—the initiative provided participants with the opportunity to engage directly with challenges inspired by real operational scenarios. From obstacle navigation and hazardous material detection to supply chain coordination and rapid response, each task reflected functions carried out in peacekeeping and humanitarian contexts.
By translating complex operational needs into hands-on challenges, the competition highlighted how innovation, engineering, and problem-solving contribute to enabling missions in some of the world’s most demanding environments.

What happens when academic research is tested against real challenges faced in United Nations field operations context?

Through the Academia Partnership Programme, the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) collaborated with the Geospatial Technologies Master’s Programme at Universitat Jaume I. This year, the project centred on “Innovative Solutions for Geospatial and IoT Challenges in Field Operations.”
This year, postgraduate student projects turned operational data into practical prototypes using AI, geospatial analytics, and simulation. The results included predictive models, interactive dashboards, and optimization tools to support disaster response, humanitarian operations, fuel efficiency, and situational awareness. Several of these solutions are being assessed for further development within UNGSC.

This month, a delegation was welcomed at the Palau de la Generalitat, in the framework of the High-Level Committee on Management meeting, which brought together colleagues from across the United Nations system.

The event provided an opportunity to engage with local authorities and partners supporting the UN presence in Valencia, where UN entities continue to expand their operations, now comprising nearly 750 personnel across UN premises in Valencia.

During the reception, the Regional Minister for Social Services, Equality and Housing, Elena Albalat, highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with the expansion of the UN premises in Valencia and reinforce its role as a hub for innovation and cooperation.

As highlighted during the visit, UNGSC continues to position itself not only as a service provider, but as a strategic enabler— This was reflected in its demonstrated resilience, most notably following the October 2024 floods, when critical ICT services continued without interruption and operations were restored in record time, highlighting the Centre’s ability to translate resilience into concrete support for UN operations in an evolving context.

Yesterday, representatives from the Univpm Università Politecnica delle Marche (Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematical Sciences) visited the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) in Brindisi.

The visit builds on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between UNGSC and the University, with discussions focusing on concrete areas of collaboration.
Particular attention was given to the shadowing programme currently underway, which provides participants with direct exposure to how UNGSC supports field missions worldwide—offering insight into the operational, logistical and technological processes behind UN operations.

Reflecting on the visit, representatives of the University noted:
“The exchange confirmed the strong strategic value of the collaboration between Marche Polytechnic University and UNGSC, strengthening the integration of academic excellence with a highly specialized international institutional context and opening valuable opportunities for future HLM Master students.”

At the Lectures for Peace initiative hosted by the Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, the Director of the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ) was invited to deliver a keynote lecture on the practical foundations of peacekeeping effectiveness.
The initiative was organized as part of a broader programme taking place in March and April 2026 to promote a culture of peace, bringing together academic and institutional perspectives on the evolving meaning of peace.
Delivered within the framework of the ongoing collaboration between UNGSC and the University, the session engaged students, PhD candidates, and the wider academic community on how peace is enabled in practice—through the capacity to deploy, sustain, and adapt operations in complex and volatile environments.
Drawing on UNGSC’s operational role, the lecture outlined how integrated capabilities across supply chain, digital technology, and infrastructure contribute to operational readiness and continuity, supporting peace operations under demanding conditions.
Partnerships such as this strengthen the connection between academic insight and operational expertise, enhancing external understanding and support for UN capabilities while fostering collaboration across institutions.

At the United Nations Global Service Centre ( ), a visit by the Regional Stress Counsellor for Europe and the Americas, Ms. Anne-Marie Serrano-Banquet, is providing personnel in Brindisi and Valencia with access to confidential counselling sessions and practical tools to strengthen psychological safety in the workplace.
Through individual and group sessions, as well as a dedicated workshop on communication and team dynamics, colleagues are engaging in practical approaches to support well-being in demanding operational environments.
By integrating these practices into daily work, UNGSC continues to reinforce a culture where resilience, collaboration, and performance go hand in hand — strengthening operations across the globe.
