Celebrating Raksha Bandhan with a Promise for Equality ЁЯдЭ

This Raksha Bandhan, children across 20 intervention schools in Lucknow celebrated the festival through creativity, participation and a shared message of equality.

Using locally available materials, children made their own Rakhis and, going beyond traditional notions of protection, boys and girls tied Rakhis to one another. They pledged to support, respect and care for each other while contributing to a safer and more gender-responsive society.

For us, Raksha Bandhan is an opportunity to rethink protectionтАФnot as something one gender provides to another, but as a shared responsibility rooted in mutual respect, equality and care.

Through the Umeedon Ki Udaan programme, Vigyan Foundation continues to create learning spaces where girls and boys have equal opportunities, equal voice and equal space to learn, participate and grow together.

When children experience equality together, they can carry those values into their homes, communities and future.

All children deserve to have a dignified childhood free from salvery and child labour. We stand with childrights!

The Global Network for ChildrenтАЩs Participation operates in three regionsтАФSoutheast Africa, South Asia, and South AmericaтАФbecause we want to combine context-specific solutions with lessons learned that can be scaled up at the regional and global levels.
Why by region?
Although many barriers to child participation are sharedтАФlack of safe spaces, discrimination, poverty, the impact of climate change, and mental healthтАФeach region requires context-specific responses: methods, materials, and advocacy strategies that work in different realities.
What we will do in each region (summary)
- Southeast Africa
Priorities: strengthening ChildrenтАЩs Advisory Committees (CACs), community mobilization against child labor, and support for regional advocacy processes. Planned activities: training for CSOs and child delegates, in-person regional meetings, piloting of adapted materials.
- South Asia
Priorities: inclusion of girls and adolescents in rural/urban settings, youth mental health, and participatory tools in schools and communities. Planned activities: training modules, pilot workshops with CACs, and documentation for the Community of Practice (CoP).
- South America
Priorities: participation of indigenous and rural communities, advocacy on education policies, and protection of child laborers. Planned activities: training for CSOs, campaigns led by children, and strengthening of national networks.
How we connect learning
The results and tools developed in each region will be documented and shared in the virtual Community of Practice so that CSOs and childrenтАЩs committees from different regions can adapt solutions that have already proven effective.
