ഇന്ന് ഈ സമുദായാംഗങ്ങളെ മുഴുവൻ ഒരുകുടക്കീഴിൽ അണിനിരത്തി ഒന്നിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുപോകാനായി രൂപീകരിച്ച സംഘടന യാണ് അഖില കേരള ധീവര സഭ. സഭയുടെ ആദ്യകാല അധ്യക്ഷൻ ഡി. ഇ. ഒ. ആയി വിരമിച്ച കെ. കെ. ഭാസ്ക്കരനായിരുന്നു.
പരമ്പരാഗതമായി സമുദ്രവിഭവങ്ങളെ ആശ്രയിച്ച് ഉപജീവനം നടത്തുന്ന വിവിധ വിഭാഗങ്ങൾക്ക് പൊതുവായി നൽകിയിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു പേരാണ് ധീവരർ. കേരളത്തിൽ മത്സ്യബന്ധനം കുലത്തൊഴിലായി സ്വീകരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പല വിഭാഗങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവർ സമ
ാനമായ തൊഴിൽമേഖലയിലാണ് ഏർ പ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളതെങ്കിലും പ്രാദേശികമായി വ്യത്യസ്ത പേരുകളിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടുപോരുന്നത്. അരയന്മാർ, മുക്കുവർ, വാലന്മാർ തുടങ്ങിയവർ ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തിൽ പ്പെടുന്നു. പിൽക്കാലത്ത് ധീവരർ എന്ന പൊതുനാമത്തിൽ ഇവർ അറിയപ്പെടുകയും ഇവർക്കിടയിൽ പൊതുവായ കൂട്ടായ്മ ഉണ്ടാവുകയും ചെയ്തു. എങ്കിലും ആചാരാനുഷ്ഠാനങ്ങളിലും ആരാധനാസമ്പ്രദായങ്ങളിലും പ്രാദേശികമായി നേരത്തേ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ചില പ്രത്യേകതകൾ ഇപ്പോഴും തുടരുന്നതായി കണ്ടുവരുന്നു. The main source of income of this community is fishing. Many legends of historical and mythical importance is associated with this community. This small community endured a great loss due to the Tsunami that hit the southern states of India following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Traditionally, the naval armies of both Travancore and Cochin were headed and manned by Arayans, while they along with the Muslim Marikkars formed the naval forces in Malabar. The Arayans of Travancore under Velu Thampi Dalawa and Chempil Arayan rebelled against the British in 1808, which was the first rebellion against the British in Kerala. Some historians treat them as subsect of Mukkuvarcommunity found across South India and Sri Lanka although in caste hierarchy Mukkuvars are considered inferior to Arayans. The Indian spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi was born to an Arayan family. The community mostly lives in Muslim majority regions of Kerala and are often targeted for their religious beliefs. In 2003, eight Arayan fishermen were hacked to death by Muslims during the Marad massacre. Although numerically they form only a tiny fraction of the population of Kerala, the Arayan community boasts of a number of important personalities such as Kummanam Rajasekharan, the Chairman of Hindu Aikya Vedi. Currently the community is organized under the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha.
