The Teli community of Manipur has been an integral part of the state for the last 400 years. Their ancestors arrived in the 17th century during the reign of King Khagimba to trade and operate oil presses. Today, the community is concentrated mainly in the Telepatty and Mantripukhri areas of Imphal East. The Teli community has had a long and significant contribution to the history and economy of Manipur. Historical Origin: After the arrival of these traders during the reign of King Khagimba (1597–1652 AD), they gradually settled in the state. In the early years, they were scattered across parts of the state. Land Allotment: Later, during the reign of King Churachand, these families were provided land in the Telepati and Mantripukhri areas for settlement. Livelihood: Their traditional livelihood centered on crushing mustard and other oilseeds to extract edible oil, which was sold in local markets. Claim to Indigenous Status: Representatives of the Teli community believe that having lived in the state for more than four centuries and having fully integrated into the local culture, they too deserve the status of the state's original inhabitants.
