A child struggles to read the blackboard. Is it a learning problem, or a vision problem?
It is not always easy to tell.

A child may sit closer to the blackboard, hold a book close to their face, lose interest in reading or struggle to follow lessons. If their vision has never been checked, the reason can go unnoticed.

For children in underserved communities, getting an eye check-up is not always easy. This can leave common problems such as refractive errors and cataract undetected.

This is where Akhand Jyoti’s Bal Drishti initiative comes in.

Instead of waiting for children to reach an eye hospital, Bal Drishti takes screening to them through schools and Anganwadis. Children are checked for common eye problems, and those who need further care are connected to specialised treatment at the Centre of Excellence, Bihar’s only comprehensive paediatric eye care centre.

In FY 2025-26, 2,27,510 children were screened through Bal Drishti across schools and Anganwadis.

Some stories never get the chance to be told. Muskan’s could have been one of them.

At 22, Muskan is building a future in eye care. She is in her third year of a Bachelor of Optometry and is also gaining practical experience as an optometry trainee.

Her journey here was far from easy.

Muskan lost her father, Jitendra Singh, in an accident. Her mother, Babita Devi, is a homemaker, and she has a younger brother. With limited financial resources, continuing her education was far from certain. She found strength in her grandparents, with whom she lives and shares a close bond.

She had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. In 2021, Akhand Jyoti’s 'Football to Eyeball' Girls’ Empowerment Programme gave her a pathway to continue her education free of cost.

Muskan took that opportunity and built on it.

Today, she is pursuing optometry, gaining practical experience, and moving towards financial independence while supporting her family.

Her circumstances could have changed the course of her life. Instead, an opportunity helped her keep moving forward.
Since 2009, over 1,100 girls have been empowered through the 'Football to Eyeball' Girls’ Empowerment Programme.

Sometimes, the greatest barrier to eye care is how far away it is.

For families in rural and underserved communities, distance, limited healthcare infrastructure, and the cost of travel can make timely eye care difficult to reach. When care is delayed, a treatable eye condition can become a lasting loss of sight, and with it, the ability to work, learn, care for a family, or live independently.

Through its Blindness Elimination Programme, Akhand Jyoti reaches underserved communities through outreach camps, where people are screened, counselled and connected to treatment. Those requiring surgery or specialised care can then access treatment through Akhand Jyoti's surgical centres, creating a pathway from the last mile to quality eye care.

Some realities should never be accepted as destiny.

For generations, too many girls in rural Bihar have grown up with decisions made for them.

Child marriage. Dowry. Domestic violence.

Limited education. Few opportunities to work.

Their future often seems decided long before they have the chance to decide it themselves.

Akhand Jyoti chose not to accept that reality.

When we started the 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Empowerment Programme in 2009, it was never only about football. It was never only about training optometrists.

It was about giving rural girls the confidence, education, professional skills and opportunity to rewrite the future that society had too often written for them.

What began with just two girls has today empowered more than 1,130 rural girls, many of whom now serve as optometrists, educators, and entrepreneurs.

This journey has never been about creating jobs alone.

It has always been about creating leaders where society expected limitations, and proving that when rural girls are trusted with opportunity, they reshape what is possible.

Why do we go to the last mile for an eye screening camp?

For an agrarian-heavy region like Bihar and its surroundings, coming for a simple eye screening can mean giving up the wage of an entire day. For many families, losing a day's income is simply not an option.

Cataract surgery takes less than 15 minutes. Yet treatment can only begin once cataract is diagnosed, and diagnosis begins with a simple screening. For many, even reaching that first screening is the hardest part of the journey.

That is why Akhand Jyoti conducts outreach camps in the remotest regions of Bihar, so people do not have to travel miles just for an eye screening.

Our optometrists examine every person who comes to the camp. Those who need spectacles are provided with them. Those diagnosed with cataract are referred to Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital for sight-restoring surgery.

In the last year alone, Akhand Jyoti organised around 18,600 outreach camps, ensuring that timely eye care reached communities before a day's lost wages could stand in the way.

For someone living in a remote village, an eye hospital can feel a long way away. A check-up may mean a long journey, a day away from work, or simply putting it off for another day. Over time, blurred vision can become something they learn to live with.

Drishti Saathi changes that.

Our Vision Vans travel into rural communities, bringing mobile eye care and screening closer to where people live. With facilities for vision testing and refraction, along with tele-ophthalmology consultations, they connect patients with eye-care professionals remotely and help identify those who may need further examination or treatment.

But behind every screening is a person.

For an elderly farmer, it could mean finding out why the world has started to look blurred. For a mother, it could mean discovering a child’s vision problem early. For someone who has quietly adapted to poor vision, it could be the first step towards seeing life more clearly.

One act of care can change a life. But its impact does not stop there.

Clear vision can change the way a person lives each day. It can help a child see the blackboard at school, an adult continue working, and an older person move around independently. It can mean being able to do the things that once became difficult.

And when rural girls are given the opportunity to learn and grow, they can build careers, lead change and create new possibilities within their own communities.

These are individual stories. But together, they tell the story of Akhand Jyoti.

For over two decades, with the support of people who believe in this mission, Akhand Jyoti has helped restore 1.4 million+ visions and empower more than 1,130 girls.

Much of what children learn in school depends on what they are able to see. In fact, it is often estimated that nearly 80%* of classroom learning is visual.

When poor vision goes unnoticed, a child is not simply missing what is written on the blackboard. They may read slowly, avoid raising their hand because they cannot follow the lesson, or even be labelled “weak” or “lazy” when the real barrier is their vision.

The difficulty is that poor vision in children often goes unnoticed. A child who has never seen clearly has little reason to think anything is wrong.

Unless the problem is identified through an eye examination, it can remain undetected while affecting how the child learns, participates in class and grows in confidence. That is why childhood vision screening is more than a health check. It is an opportunity to remove a barrier to learning before it begins shaping a child's future.

With this belief, Akhand Jyoti's Bal Drishti initiative has screened more than 2,61,000 children across schools and Anganwadis, helping identify vision problems early and connect children with timely treatment.

Because sometimes, what looks like a child struggling to learn is simply a child struggling to see.

Why should world-class eye care stop at the city limits?

For many people in rural India, quality eye care is still difficult to reach. In rural Bihar, long distances, limited specialist services, and the cost of treatment can make it harder for people to get the care they need.

Akhand Jyoti believes where quality eye care is needed should matter more than where it is easiest to provide.

That belief shaped a very deliberate decision: to establish the Akhand Jyoti Centre of Excellence in Mastichak, Bihar, bringing skilled eye care to a rural setting. Here, a patient’s ability to pay does not determine the quality of care they receive.

The Centre is part of a wider network that performed more than 185,500 surgeries last year, with clinical outcomes consistently meeting global benchmarks.

Making this possible are the people behind the care: surgeons and clinical teams treating patients, researchers strengthening practice through evidence, educators preparing future eye care professionals, and field teams connecting communities with care.
