At first glance, football and eye care seem unrelated.

Yet in rural Bihar, football became the bridge between two pressing challenges: gender inequality and avoidable blindness.

In 2009, Akhand Jyoti launched the 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Empowerment Programme with a simple idea: use football as an icebreaker to bring girls out of their homes and into a world of opportunity.

Football was never the destination. It was the beginning.

From the football field, girls move into education, vocational training and professional careers as optometrists, opticians, Vision Centre heads and patient care professionals. In doing so, they become part of a growing eye care workforce that strengthens Akhand Jyoti's eye care ecosystem and helps bring quality eye care to underserved communities.

Today, 1,130+ rural girls have come through the programme. Many now serve as frontline eye care professionals, while more than 19 have represented Bihar at state and national football competitions.

Football to Eyeball is more than a girls' empowerment initiative. It is a dual-purpose model that challenges gender barriers while building the skilled workforce needed to eliminate avoidable blindness.

Healthy ageing is shaped by the habits we carry through life.

Marking the 12𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚, the Akhand Jyoti family came together at the Centre of Excellence Campus in Mastichak for a rejuvenating session of yoga and pranayama under the guidance of 𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐉𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐣. The programme was organised by 𝐆𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡, Mastichak, in collaboration with 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐲𝐨𝐭𝐢 𝐀𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐲𝐚𝐝𝐡𝐚𝐦, Akhand Jyoti's centre for wellness and holistic living.

Celebrating this year's theme, '𝐘𝐨𝐠𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠,' the gathering highlighted the importance of practices that nurture physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout life.

This belief is deeply embedded in Akhand Jyoti's work. Through the '𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐲𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥' 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬' 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞, girls are introduced to yoga alongside their eye care training, helping them cultivate discipline, resilience, and healthy habits that strengthen both body and mind from an early age.

In many rural families, spotting a vision problem is only the beginning. Reaching care is often the greater challenge.

This is concerning as over 90% of blindness and visual impairment cases in India are preventable or treatable when detected early.

But eye checks are rarely routine. They mean lost wages, long travel, and support from another family member. As a result, vision problems identified in minutes often remain untreated for years.

Refractive errors are mistaken for ageing. Children struggle in classrooms unaware they need glasses.

This reality shaped Akhand Jyoti’s approach.

Over two decades, care was brought closer through 50+ Vision Centres, supported by hospitals, vision vans, outreach camps, and following '10 square box' (Dus Ka Dubba)** model.

To bridge the gap, in-house optical units enable glasses to be dispensed within 2 to 3 hours.

That belief became Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital.
