At Akhand Jyoti, the support of IDBI Bank Limited is helping us strengthen ophthalmic diagnostics and support cataract and corneal treatments for underserved communities across Bihar.

Good eye health should be part of growing up.

From the first books they read to the games they play, children use their eyes to discover, understand, and experience the world around them. Looking after their eyes, therefore, deserves to be part of their everyday care.

But for many children in rural communities, access to an eye screening can be difficult.

Through Bal Drishti initiative, Akhand Jyoti brings eye screening closer to children by reaching schools and Anganwadis across rural Bihar. When a vision concern is identified, children can be connected to the care they need.

This Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, let’s make eye care a natural part of caring for every child. By bringing screening closer to where children learn and grow, we can make it easier for them to access timely eye care.

Because healthy eyes are not just about seeing well. They are part of growing, learning, and discovering the world with confidence.

Some moments in life are too precious to miss.

The first time a grandchild is held. The first smile. The first steps. The small moments that become lifelong memories.

But when sight is lost, some of these moments can slip away unseen.

For many families in rural India, cataract can mean more than difficulty seeing. It can keep grandparents from fully experiencing the lives of the people they love, while gradually taking away their independence and connection to everyday life.

Through the Blindness Elimination Programme, Akhand Jyoti works to ensure that avoidable blindness does not take these moments away. Through our 5 surgical hospitals, including the Centre of Excellence Eye Hospital, 50+ Vision Centres and outreach programmes, we take eye care closer to communities that need it most.

Over two decades, we have performed more than 1.4 million sight-restoring surgeries*, helping people see the people and moments that matter to them.

Freedom begins with sight. Empowerment gives it purpose.

As India marks 80 years of Independence, we celebrate a freedom that is deeply personal, the freedom to see the faces we love, to learn, to earn, to care for our families, and to shape our own future.

For over two decades, Akhand Jyoti has been helping people reclaim that freedom. More than 10.4 million* eye screenings have opened the door to timely care, while over 1.4 million* sight-restoring surgeries have done far more than restore vision. They have helped children return to classrooms, parents return to work, grandparents regain their independence, and families rediscover hope.

But true freedom is not only about seeing the world. It is about having the opportunity to change it.

Through our Football to Eyeball Girls’ Empowerment Programme, more than 1,130 rural girls have challenged deep-rooted social barriers, pursued professional education, achieved financial independence, and returned as eye care professionals to serve the very communities where they once dreamed of a different future.

This is the India we celebrate, where restored sight becomes renewed confidence, where opportunity replaces limitation, and where one act of care creates a ripple of change across generations.

This Independence Day, we honour every life that has discovered freedom through sight and every young rural woman who is proving that the greatest independence is the power to transform someone else’s life.

Sometimes, the hardest decisions are made long before adulthood begins.

When Srinjal Singh lost her father in 2022, her family's life changed overnight. Her mother began working as a tailor to support the household, and the dream Srinjal had carried for years suddenly had to make room for new realities.

A year later, she joined Akhand Jyoti through the ‘Football to Eyeball’ Girls' Empowerment Programme. What followed was not a dramatic transformation, but the beginning of a different chapter, shaped by learning, resilience and quiet determination.

In rural Bihar, 1 in 100 children lives with visual impairment.

For many, the signs are easy to miss. A child may sit closer to the blackboard, lose interest in classroom activities or struggle during play without realising that poor eyesight is the reason.

Without timely intervention, these challenges can affect far more than a child's vision. They can shape confidence, learning and future opportunities.

Through Bal Drishti, Akhand Jyoti brings eye care directly to schools and anganwadis across rural Bihar. Children are screened for vision problems, receive spectacles when needed, and, if specialised treatment is required, are referred to the Akhand Jyoti Centre of Excellence.

Between FY 2025 and 2026, more than two lakh children were screened, and 2,291 received spectacles through schools and anganwadis.

By 2027, we aim to screen 5,00,000 children, ensuring timely eye care reaches them before avoidable vision problems shape their future.

A child who sees the world clearly fills a page with endless possibilities.

A superhero, a doctor, a teacher and the future they can imagine.

But for a child living with poor vision, the world can look very different.

A tree without leaves. A face without details. Words on a blackboard that slowly disappear from the back of the classroom.
For many children, this isn't imagination. It's simply how they see the world.

In India, an estimated 1 in 9 schoolchildren has a refractive error. That's why early eye screening matters.

Through Bal Drishti, Akhand Jyoti screened more than 2,61,470 children across rural Bihar in FY 2025–26, helping identify vision problems early and connect children with the care they need.

For many rural girls, the greatest barrier is not a lack of potential. It is the absence of a pathway to turn that potential into possibility.

In Bihar, where female literacy stands at 66.1%, many girls in underserved rural communities continue to face barriers to education, professional opportunities and leadership.*

Through the ‘Football to Eyeball’ Girls’ Empowerment Programme, Akhand Jyoti creates a pathway for girls to build confidence, continue their education and prepare for meaningful careers. Football serves as an icebreaker, helping girls develop confidence, discipline and teamwork before their journey continues through education, spirituality and leadership development.

By FY 2025 to 2026, more than 1,130 girls had been empowered through the programme, creating new possibilities for themselves and contributing to their communities.
Through Vision 2030, we aim to empower 1,500 rural girls, enabling more of them to pursue education, build careers and emerge as leaders.

Because empowering a rural girl is not about deciding her future for her. It is about ensuring she has the opportunity to shape it herself.
