In Episode 5 of our interview series 'The Blow-Ins of Inbhear Scéine', we hear from Mo Stafford and Vincent Hyland, who made the move to the Caherdaniel/Derrynane area in 2009 and have since become deeply connected to the landscape.
Drawing on extensive careers in catering, tech, education, and environmental work, Mo and Vincent share the story of how a chance reconnection over an illustration of Irish fish led them to build a new life together on the Inbhear Scéine. They reflect on the challenges and rewards of settling into this coastal/rural community, the importance of balance, and the gradual process of building careers off the land.
In this episode, Vincent discusses the development of 'Wild Derrynane', a book encompassing years of wildlife photography, habitat research, and marine biology work. He shares the journey of documenting the area's remarkable biodiversity and creating a comprehensive guide to Derrynane’s wildlife, a labour of love that took more than a decade to complete.
Mo shares with us her passion for foraging through her 'From Ditches to Dishes' initiative, which encourages people to reconnect with nature, embrace the gifts nature provides, and discover the abundance of edible plants and natural resources growing all around us. She highlights the importance of knowledge, safety, and respect for the environment when foraging.
Together, Mo and Vincent offer thoughtful insights into belonging, community, environmental stewardship, and the unique opportunities that come with building a life along Kenmare Bay. Their story is one of curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for the natural world that surrounds them.
