BADIG is a community group based in Ballymun where people with disabilities - and people who support them - work to share information, raise awareness and advocate on behalf of issues of particular interest to disabled people.

🚆 Good news for passengers with disabilities!

Irish Rail is introducing a new Passenger Assistance Management System to make train travel more accessible and easier to organise.

The new system is designed to help passengers request assistance through an app, website or phone, and improve coordination of support when boarding, changing trains and arriving at their destination.

The rollout is planned in stages during 2026.

♿ Budget 2027: What does it mean for people with disabilities?

Budget 2027 has now been announced, with a number of measures affecting disabled people and disability services in Ireland.

Key measures include:

💶 €10 weekly increase in core social welfare payments from January 2027, including Disability Allowance.

💶 A new €500 Cost of Disability Payment for approximately 240,000 people receiving long-term disability payments. The payment is expected in early 2027, with the Minister for Social Protection saying he wants it introduced as early as possible and no later than the end of March.

🏠 During 2027, an additional 191,000 hours of home support and personal assistance are planned.

👥 930 additional disability service workers are planned during 2027.

🏡 489 additional residential care packages and 1,500 new day service plans are also planned for 2027, along with increased respite provision.

The introduction of a Cost of Disability Payment is an important recognition of the additional costs faced by disabled people. However, disability organisations have highlighted that €500 remains far below the actual additional costs many disabled people face throughout the year.

💶 The Cost of Disability is real.

Living with a disability often comes with extra everyday costs — including transport, heating, medical expenses, assistive technology and taking part in community life.

Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) is calling for a recurring Cost of Disability payment in Budget 2027, rather than relying on one-off supports.

DFI is proposing a universal, non-taxable payment of €55 per week as an interim step towards addressing these additional costs.

With Budget 2027 approaching, it is important that the real cost of living with a disability is recognised.

On 16 September, we held our Tea & Coffee Morning at The Atrium, Civic Centre, Ballymun.

It was a lovely opportunity to meet, chat, share information and talk about disability, accessibility and the experiences of people in our community.

📢 BADIG was delighted to attend a special event hosted by Ballymun Community Law Centre.

The event brought together members of the local community, public representatives and organisations to celebrate the important work of the Law Centre and highlight the importance of knowing and protecting our rights.

It was a great opportunity to meet people, hear from the speakers and learn more about the Fight for Your Rights guide.

💻 Technology can change lives.

Acquired Brain Injury Ireland has received new funding to continue its creATe programme, helping people with acquired brain injuries access and use assistive technology.

The programme provides personalised assessments, training and ongoing support with tools such as screen readers, communication apps and voice-activated assistants.

Assistive technology can help people communicate, access education and employment, manage everyday tasks and live more independently.

Accessibility isn't just about removing barriers — sometimes it's about giving people the right tools to overcome them. 💜

Access to dental care is still a major issue for many people with disabilities in Ireland.

This week, Trinity College Dublin highlighted serious barriers and long waits for preventive dental care for people with disabilities.

Good oral health is not a luxury. It is an essential part of overall health and quality of life.

Accessible healthcare means healthcare that everyone can actually access.
