NEW WWEN EVENT! River Dipping in the Greese River, Dunlavin

Saturday 15 August, Free event.

11am and 12.30pm

Get up close and personal with river life with an interactive river dipping session in the Greese River in Dunlavin. This Heritage Week event, led by nature expert Patrick Hunt, will include a demonstration of river dipping followed by an interactive session where participants will discover the hidden life of the river, develop new identification skills and learn what river invertebrate life can tell us about our natural environment.

River dipping is a sampling of river water with bucket, net and tray to identify the invertebrate life and hidden creatures that have their home in the river. Equipment is provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own hand nets, if they have them.

This is a free event but booking is essential as numbers are limited.

West Wicklow strawberries have arrived. As good as the the Wexford ones but a few weeks later. Great crop this year from a relatively small raised bed. I think sun brought them on but also clearing the older plants last year and adding compost and straw to the bed all helped. I'll have to make jam.

If you love nature - mountains, bogs, woodlands, the ocean and the flora and fauna species that collectively make up our ecosystems - please send one email to help secure the future for nature in Ireland.

As required by Europe, Ireland has produced a draft Nature Restoration Plan. Ireland’s plan is not strong enough or clear enough.

Ireland's leading environmental organisations have identified nine key asks of government. Use some or all of these, in an email to [email protected] (closing date Wednesday 1st July):

1. An Ambitious Nature Restoration Plan
2. Political Leadership and Whole-of-Government Approach
3. Dedicated, long-Term funding to deliver the Nature Restoration Plan
4. Unlock the Potential of Public Lands to deliver for nature and people
5. Empower Civil Society to play its part
6. Empower Farmers, Fishers, and Foresters to lead on nature restoration
7. No Backsliding on Environmental Protections
8. An Ecologically Coherent Network of Marine Protected Areas
9. Prioritise the habitats of threatened species
