🐝There is something fishy going on in town!!!!
🐝As part of our project to enhance the Graham Norton walk, a new sculpture has been installed celebrating the Salmon of the Bandon River. A symbol of wisdom in Irish mythology and prized throughout our history, this species is under threat from pollution and climate change.
🐝This latest sculpture adds to the Bat sculpture installed here recently and the ones we commissioned in previous years on the Glasslyn Road and in MUGA, all of which celebrate our native fauna. We hope to add a few more to create a sculpture trail for locals and visitors, and to inspire an appreciation for our local wildlife and habitat.
🐝Thanks to artist Nathan Solomon for continuing to work on this series, Cork County Council for funding this project through the Cork County Council Community Fund and to the local Cork County Council crew for installing this for us.
🐝We have some tidying up to do along this walk and will continue to add more and more colour to the flower beds here over time to make this an even nicer place for you all.
🐝Please keep yourselves and dogs off the beds and don't litter. Dog waste bags and bin can be found in MUGA/Riverside Park near the end of this walk.

🐝Parking can be a touchy subject in Bandon but I think we might have created a space or two tonight by cleaning up in the lower church car park!!! Plenty cut back and the place is looking much better.
🐝We cleaned out the gutters there too which should make for better drainage with this very welcome bit of rain.
🐝We were also out on St Patrick's Quay this evening, tidying up the planters and clearing away some of the over growth on the quay walls.
🐝We made a start on the New Road too. Busy, busy!
🐝Another announcement is coming tomorrow so stay tuned.

We usually stick to the good news stories (because that is what we bring to town) but there has been a string of both vandalism and theft of planters and plants in recent weeks reported by Tidy Towns groups in our neighbouring towns and other parts of the country.

Sadly, we are not immune. There was an incidence of vandalism earlier in the year which we dealt with quietly. But more recently, this week a wonderful sea holly which had just come into bloom was lifted from one of our planters outside Thornfields. We work on a shoestring budget to add colour to our town and cannot afford this sort of thing. But it is not the price of a plant… it is the hundreds of volunteer hours spend planning, planting, weeding, watering, and cultivating those plants as well as taking care of all the places across town that everyone gets to enjoy, whether they support us or not.

If people work to destroy what Tidy Towns Groups do, the result is quite simple…. volunteers give up. Footpaths, walks and beds become overgrown, litter piles up in the streets, arts and heritage projects stop, community spirit gets dampened, nature loses a protector and our town becomes a less attractive place to shop, live and visit.

We know the odds are slim but if the responsible person wants to step forward and make this right we will leave it at that. But I would ask everyone who supports us to keep an eye out. If you see something amiss, someone causing damage or someone dumping/littering, take a photograph/video and send it to us. The only way we will continue to improve our town is if we make bad behaviours totally unacceptable and ensure those bad actors know our community will not tolerate them and that they are being watched.

🐝Thanks to Access Credit Union - Bandon Branch for providing us window space to display some of our more recent medals from the Tidy Towns Competition. For anyone wanting to join in and get us an even shinier colour medal in future years, there is information on display about some of the ways that you can take part, no matter what your age, ability or time availability.
🐝If you want to jump straight in, we are meeting at 7pm this evening (Tuesday 28th) opposite Bandon Fire Station. All welcome.

Our latest sculpture is now in place on the Graham Norton Walk to add to the existing ones on the Glasslyn Road, Riverside Park and Bernard's Bridge Walk. We have kept up the nature theme, with this one celebrating bats. Often misunderstood, our native bats are hugely important to our ecosystem and do an amazing job keeping insect and pest populations under control. These incredible creatures are protected species and Bandon's woodlands and rivers remain an important habitat for them.

We have another installation coming here soon to celebrate a very different native species, along with further improvements which will tie in with the reopening of the western entrance to the walk as part of the TPREP works.

Massive thanks to artist Nathan, Topline Kellehers Hardware for storing and craning this in position and Cork County Council's Bandon crew for sorting the base and brackets. This project was funded by Cork County Council's Community Fund.
