🇬🇧 Swimming in infant position is the perfect spot when a calf gets hungry - they are right next to the mammaries and can signal to mom by bumping her slow down a bit so they can start nursing.

Sound On! Although you can barely see these two killer whales in the low light, you can definitively hear another species singing in the background. Humpback whales! Also present in Norway, we met them a couple times throughout the week but only heard them sing on this day! (Day 2 of the Dec '25 trip)

DCP students aren't just into dolphins! From Chloe:
"I wrapped up an incredible internship with the Wellbeing and Records team at Zoo Miami! My summer consisted of creating and running ethograms to track animal behavior and ensure their resident animals were living their absolute best lives. Every day brought a new perspective on wildlife care and behavioral observation. Major appreciation to the team for an unforgettable summer!"

We’ve all seen an animal (like a pet cat or dog) get the “zoomies.” Guess what? Dolphins get them too! Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs) is the scientific term for “Zoomies.” FRAPs are one way for an animal to release energy, de-stress, or show their excitement. Because marine mammals, like dolphins, are so intelligent and have high energy levels, zoomies also function as a stimulation method. Some scientists think that zoomies are sometimes a hunting or herding method, especially if the animal is near a seawall or a school of fish. Others think zoomies are a way of social bonding, non-verbal communication, parasite or remora removal, or mating display. So, grab some popcorn and enjoy the dolphin zoomies.

Researching dolphin behavior is more than spending the day on the water making observations in real time. The real discoveries actually happen right here, staring at a screen.

Behind every dataset are hours and hours spent analyzing video footage, pausing, rewinding, and logging specific behaviors. It takes patience but eventually, you find patterns, and that's where the real magic happens!

Students are big part of DCP's work, including Sarah, whom you'll hear more from as the semester gets going!
