Living in an Anthropogenic World: Adaptation and Resilience in a Tailless Dolphin
Koa is a wild dolphin surviving without tail flukes; an extraordinary physical disability with only five other documented cases worldwide. Drawing on nearly two years of field monitoring and community science data, this talk explores key insights into Koa’s behavioral adaptations, pod dynamics, and resilience while navigating heavily trafficked coastal waters. DCP is grateful to have Lauren Rust, founder and director of Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, leading this presentation. Lauren has been working with marine mammals worldwide for almost 25 years and is currently the South Carolina state coordinator for all marine mammal strandings including dolphins and whales. This work involves responding to the 50-60 marine mammals that strand each year.

Kathleen was pleasantly surprised at the good underwater visibility on Monday morning, given the overnight rain. Data of many types were collected and divers enjoyed boat rides and underwater time. In this post's photos, you can see the dolphins waiting (patiently?) for Kathleen to enter the water, Tank & Buzz rolling around, and Tilly & Alita sharing pectoral fin contacts.

Our enthusiastic ecotour group joined Kathleen for the 6:30 AM boat to Bailey's Key. Kathleen collected underwater data (43rd session of 2026!); you can see Rocky, Tank & Buzz in today's photos. Later in the day, we completed on-cue vocal recordings of several dolphins, which will help Hayley in her PhD project.

Day 3 of our Dec '25 research trip in Norway was a challenge due to the weather but this juvenile was the highlight of the day. Killer whales, as other dolphins species, can be very curious and this juvenile seemed quite interested in our boat engine (in neutral) for a few minutes.

The first step to any research project is reading "the" literature! For DCP students with projects focused on the dolphins at RIMS, this can include any scientific papers about bottlenose dolphins, other animal species, previous DCP publications, and any scientific studies that fit with the project. Familiarizing yourself with the literature related to your project is an essential part of any research study.
