駐園藝術家公告:森川步(Alvdalen)正式進駐藝舍 🌲Artist-in-Residence Announcement: Alvdalen Has Officially Moved into the Art House! 🦉

The pulse of the forest is quietly taking shape.

We are delighted to announce that Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden’s 2026–2027 Artist-in-Residence Programme welcomes the woodcarving artist duo, Justin Chan and Vivian Law (Alvdalen Atelier / 森川步工房)! Utilizing salvaged wood collected from KFBG’s own tree pruning operations, they are crafting a brand-new upcycled wooden sculpture—transforming timber that might otherwise have been discarded into an artwork brimming with vitality. They have officially moved into our Art House on-site to embark on a months-long journey of local creation and ecological observation.

✨ A Sneak Peek: The Artists' Creative Inspiration
Standing approximately 2 metres tall, the wooden sculpture they are co-designing, Three Lives of Nature: The Pulse of the Forest, draws inspiration from Indigenous North American totem poles. Centred around the core imagery of the owl—the guardian of the forest—the artists liken the owl's habitat and breath to a protective force. This presence ripples outward subtly, nurturing tree hollows, linking the canopy, sheltering young seedlings, and even touching every microscopic life within the soil. Through reclaimed wood and a public installation, they seek to guide us in perceiving the collective pulse of the forest, reflecting a vision where all living things are interdependent and coexist in harmony.

(💡 Swipe left to catch a first glimpse of the artists' conceptual sketches and creative inspirations!)

💬 Step into the Art House & Say Hi!
Artistic creation should not merely be a finished piece standing inside a gallery for restricted display; it is a living, breathing dialogue. We warmly invite you to drop by the Art House during your next visit to KFBG:

👉 You are welcome to:
▸ Witness firsthand the transformation of a wooden artwork from scratch.
▸ Chat with Justin and Vivian about their ecological narratives and contemporary artistic reflections.
▸ Deepen your understanding of the fusion between traditional woodcraft, reclaimed wood, and sustainable creation.

Let’s come together to support sustainable art, connect with nature, and discover how local wood can be transformed into pieces full of purpose, meaning, and life.

📍 Artist in residence: Creation in progress! You are most welcome to come and exchange ideas.
Venue: Art House, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG)
Date: Open occasionally from 18 June 2026 onwards

🎶 Listen... it’s the melody of nature. 🌿

The rustle of leaves, the chirping of birds, and melodies echoing through the woods… when was the last time you truly sat back and listened to the voice of the earth?

In the latest episode of RTHK’s Hong Kong Stories - Echos of Sound, several local musicians take us on a journey into the wild to create music in harmony with nature. We highly recommend watching Kawa’s segment, where he beautifully demonstrates how to converse with the environment through sound. It is incredibly moving!

Join us as we journey inward and reconnect with a sense of calm and clarity.

In the height of summer, nature is vibrant and alive 🌱

⛰️ Loving the Land Talk Series | The Hidden Link: Life on the Ground and Below the Soil

Life below ground is often overlooked, yet soil animals are among nature’s most powerful detritivores and ecosystem engineers. We invite you to explore the fascinating world of soil animals and discover the hidden, vital links between below-ground and above-ground ecosystems.✨

Join us for an online dialogue featuring Dr Law Man Suet Michelle, lecturer at the School of Life Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Dr Gary Ades, Head of Fauna Conservation Department at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), as they share their expert perspectives and insights.

In this talk, Michelle and Gary explore the crucial role of earthworms and the animals that they interact with on the forest floor. They discuss how the activities of these tiny underground creatures contribute to soil ecosystems and support the growth of above-ground plants and animals. The discussion also addresses the ecological benefits, the essential food chain links between the below-ground world and the forest floor, and likely hardships imposed by seasonal changes and climate change.

Through a mixture of stories, science and expert observations, Gary and Michelle guide us to an exploration of life above and below the forest floor, inspiring us to appreciate and love the land beneath our feet.

Exciting News! Rare Brown Wood Owls Successfully Breed Again at KFBG! 🦉

We kept this information under our wraps for a few weeks, to ensure that the young Brown Wood Owl would grow up quietly, but today we are extremely happy to share the news that a pair of Brown Wood Owls have once again successfully bred at Farm and Botanic Garden this year. We have been observing them for several weeks, and two healthy and lively chicks successfully fledged in May!

This is one of the largest native owl species, and this forest-dependent bird naturally dispersed into Hong Kong from adjacent southern China within the last two decades. The fact that this pair has repeatedly chosen KFBG as its nesting site in past years reflects the success of our long-term forest restoration and conservation efforts.

🌎 KEP 2026 ‘Awakening of Memory’ Talk Series | Learning the Language of the Land by Donna Kerridge

The land is always speaking. Are you ready to listen? 🌲🌧️✨
In the Māori worldview, the natural world is far from silent. The earth, forests, plants, soil, birds, insects, animals and water are continuously speaking. Learning to understand this language is just as essential as learning to communicate with one another.

In this upcoming online talk, Donna Kerridge invites us to listen to the whispers of the land, to feel, experience and be a part of nature. As we learn to listen, we gain a new way of seeing the world – one that recognises the deep interconnectedness and interdependence of all living beings.

Donna beautifully reminds us that “we are all Indigenous to somewhere and carry ancestral wisdom in our bones”. Through the practice, stories and indigenous insights, she gently guides us to remember our connection to the natural world, awakening our deep responsibility as caretakers of ourselves, each other and the Earth.

Step into Zen through photography. 🧘🏻‍♀️ Be natural and at ease, just like nature. 🌿
Chang Lin guides you to integrate Zen into the art of living. In this half-day photography workshop, we start with seated meditation – regulating the body, the breath and the heart. We will then appreciate the Venerable's photographic works, listen to his Zen journey and personally experience "Zen Photography" from the heart in nature.

It’s not just about pressing the shutter; it’s about feeling the present moment and shooting as naturally as breathing. Capture the grass, trees, light and shadows of this very moment, or that ethereal tranquillity. At the end of the workshop, you have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the Venerable, share your insights and listen to his inspiration.

Change your perspective, and you will take entirely different photos. Some are perfect, some are imperfect – but just like nature, and just like life, every frame is a true existence and every moment is beautiful. 💚
