We are delighted to announce the final athlete from our 2025 Hong Kong Trail Running Training program! Introducing Cheryl Telino Apic!!

I'm Cheryl, I've been working here in Hong Kong for 18 years. I come from the north of the Philippines. Since I was a child I often explored the mountain and hiked for days.

I have loved running since I was in primary school. I often watched and read about female runner athletes like Lydia de Vega, Elma Muros and Nancy Navalta. But because of change in my priorities and goals I lost interest in running.

When I came here to HK, I started to hike a lot and met new friends who encouraged me to try trail running, but I wasn’t confident enough to try. Finally I joined a trail run , but I was not prepared, no water, no training as in nothing. Although I finished the run, I didn't have fun and suffered and I was full of regret. So I learned a lesson there.

And now I'm so grateful that I'm included in this program of EXCHANGE AND EMPOWER and I learned a lot from preparing, exercises and food , to enhance my body for trail running, and I practiced it during my training. Since this is my first time to officially join in a major long distance trail running (for me),my goal is to finish the 25km without injury and to enjoy and have fun while participating in this trail running event.

I would also like to say once again thank you to all the people who are behind this program that helps others or the underprivileged , to help them realize their value in the community that they can do more. Thank you also to all the mentors and sponsors.

We are delighted to introduce Collen Ruth Zurbito, an athlete in our Hong Kong Trail Running Training Program!

My name is Collen, a 35-year-old single mother to a 17-year-old son, and I am from Sablayan Occidental Mindoro in the Philippines. I have been residing and working in Hong Kong for the past seven years. My journey into running and trail sports began when I relocated to Discovery Bay, where I was captivated by the region's stunning landscapes, including its trails and beaches.

I am currently a member of two dragon boat teams: TADOS, which is composed entirely of domestic helpers in Discovery Bay, and the United Valley Mui Wo Dragon Boat Team, a mixed team. In addition to my dragon boat training, I regularly participate in hiking activities and run each evening after work.

Two years ago, I began competing in trail and road races, where I discovered a profound excitement and adrenaline rush with each finish line crossed. The sense of achievement I feel, especially as I tackle longer distances, serves as a constant reminder of my personal growth and capabilities.

Sports have become a source of tranquility amidst the challenges I face. They provide an essential outlet for stress relief after six days of work and have become an integral part of my identity. Through my athletic pursuits, I am able to reconnect with myself and find peace and comfort, despite the difficulties of being away from home.

I’m excited and happy to be part of the Exchange and Empower Trail Running Training Program. I am grateful for the great support of my mentor and all of the program coaches.

Introducing Bernadette Briquillo, an athlete in our Hong Kong Trail Running Training Program supporting foreign domestic helpers!

Hello, my name is Bernadette, though you may call me Bela. I am 36 years old and hail from Marinduque in the Philippines. For the past three years, I have been working in Hong Kong, where I dedicate my days off to pursuing meaningful activities that foster personal growth and well-being. Hiking is a constant in my routine, as I have a profound affinity for nature—the sight of majestic mountains, the melodious chirping of birds, and the gentle caress of the wind against my skin invariably alleviate my stress. These excursions evoke memories of my hometown, nestled near mountains and rivers.

My passion for sports also shapes how I spend my leisure time. I have explored various disciplines, including boxing, volleyball, badminton, running, and rugby. Running, in particular, holds a special place in my heart, as it forms an integral part of our rugby training regimen. I often run along the seaside, where the rhythm invigorates me and fills me with a sense of vitality. Seeing groups of swift and resilient runners has been inspiring, and I hold them in great admiration.

One day, our team manager shared a link about the Exchange and Empower program, which focuses on trail running. Thrilled by the opportunity, I eagerly signed up and was fortunate enough to be selected. Now, as a participant in their trail running initiative, I am filled with joy and anticipation, eager to discover where this running journey will lead me.

I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to the mentors, nutritionist, sponsors, and founder of Exchange and Empower.
