🌊【Seagrass Planting & Dugong Conservation Tour】
The Dugong Team of the “University Student Sponsorship Programme 2025–26” has successfully returned from their field attachment in the Philippines! ✨
During their time with the local research team, the students actively participated in seagrass bed and dugong surveys. They gained a deeper understanding of the conservation status of dugongs, often referred to as “mermaids”, as well as the vital role that seagrass beds play in marine ecosystems.
Building on this experience, we are now launching the “Seagrass Planting & Dugong Conservation Tour.” Participants will visit the Tai Tam mudflat and, with the support of Prof. Juan Diego Gaitán-Espitia and his research team from The University of Hong Kong, learn more about dugong conservation and seagrass ecology, as well as take part in hands-on seagrass planting! 🌱
Join us and be part of protecting Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity! 🌊📝

🐌 Meet the Tiny Heroes of Hong Kong’s Intertidal Mudflat! 🌿

Snails are the unsung heroes in intertidal mudflat ecosystems like mangroves and mudflats. They maintain biodiversity, transform nutrients, promote sediment turnover, and provide food for predators like birds and fish. Three common species—Pirenella asiatica (Banded Cerith), Batillaria zonalis, and Cerithidea moerchii (Mangrove Mud Snail)—thrive in the muddy, intertidal zones of mangroves and mudflats. The adult shells of these three snails can range from 10mm to 46mm.These snails are Nature’s recyclers. They feed on decomposing organic matter and microalgae. By breaking down these materials, they release essential nutrients back into the ecosystem, promote sediment turnover, and help control algae growth, ensuring a healthy mudflat habitat.

While these snails share similar ecological roles, each has unique traits that set them apart:

Pirenella asiatica (Banded Cerith): They have an elongated shell with three strong spiral ridges crossed by groves on each whorl, which gives the shell their distinct beaded appearance .

Batillaria zonalis: Their shell has apparent white bandings, and the outer margin of their aperture has a distinct sinus . These snails can withstand wide variations in temperature and salinity, making them well adapted to the changing and harsh intertidal environment .

Cerithidea moerchii (Mangrove Mud Snail): Their apical tip is usually eroded, and it often bears one or two characteristic swelling or lumps along the edge of the spire . Different to the two previously introduced snails, they are primarily found in brackish water and the root systems of mangrove trees as they feed on decomposing mangrove litter and other organisms that are attached to the roots and bark of mangroves .

By recycling nutrients, promoting sediment turnover, and controlling algae, Pirenella asiatica, Batillaria zonalis, Cerithidea moerchii and many other species of snails work together to ensure the biodiversity and resilience of these coastal ecosystems, making them an indispensable part of mangrove and mudflat ecosystems. 🐾💚
