We’ve been over in North Yorkshire this morning, practicing our Riverfly ID and counting methods!

All of these larvae were in just a small stretch of Beck and carefully extracted using kick-sampling into a net and then rinsed into trays to be counted.

We had a good score for this waterbody despite the temperature drop and some ongoing pollution concerns, but unfortunately numbers of these invertebrate can plummet after a single larger pollution event…Which is bad news for our rivers and everything that lives in them. Regular counting like this, helps us to find problems before they escalate.

Today is World Rivers Day, a global celebration, designed to highlight rivers and the role they play in the health of ecosystems & communities worldwide. 🌍

Fitting in with the theme of the day, we’re celebrating one of Lancashire's most beautiful features — the River Lune. 🌿🌊

From its source near Newbiggin-on-Lune, the river winds its way for 53 miles through the spectacular Lune Valley before reaching Morecambe Bay at Plover Scar.

Along the way, it passes through some of the Red Rose County's most beautiful landscapes — including the Crook O’Lune, a favourite subject and source of inspiration for artists & writers including J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Gray and William Wordsworth. 🎨📚

For visitors exploring Lancaster and the surrounding countryside, the Lune offers a wonderful combination of spectacular scenery, wildlife & history — why not let one of accompany you along the way? 🧭

We’re onboard The Lune Rivers Trust Steam train special with West Coast Railways, en route to historical York.

This annual trip and the raffle tickets we sell on the day, raise vital funds for river protection in the Lune catchment.

We’re calling out for any train enthusiasts or photographers who have captured a quality photo of us since we left Carnforth this morning (24/09/26)

The engine is Tangmere 34067 (Battle of Britain class) refurbished in 2003.

E-fishing is an integral part of our yearly surveys to determine how our fish life is fairing across our catchment.

Our project officer Eleanor spent the day with Jono, Andy, Tony, Richard and Rob to see what it’s all about.

BREAKING
England’s rivers, lakes and coastal waters remain in a challenging state with only around one in seven classed as being in good ecological condition, according to the first comprehensive assessment of their health in six years.

And no single waterway passed a separate test by the regulator for chemical pollution.

The findings come as much of England sits in official drought, with rivers running low and more than 20 million people facing hosepipe bans.

Lower flows can concentrate the very pollution the new data is designed to track, leaving fish and other aquatic life exposed to more dangerous levels.

We’re more than delighted to announce that we’re a partner organisation in this milestone collaboration to prevent white-clawed crayfish from disappearing from our northern river systems.

Together, we will support vital conservation work across the region, with a focus on crayfish surveys, population monitoring and identifying potential Ark sites - safe refuge habitats where white-clawed crayfish can be protected from invasive species and crayfish plague.

We headed up to Orton village to look at the two contrasting strands of Chapel Beck, some impressive meandering and talk about opportunities in this most northerly part of the catchment.
