A busy morning in the hatchery 🦞

Today we collected 843 baby lobsters, known as ‘stage I larvae’.

These babies will go through three moults to reach the post-larval life stage, known as ‘stage IV’.

In the wild very few lobsters make it to the post-larval life stage. Most are consumed as fish food whilst drifting in the zooplankton.

Lobster hatcheries can increase survival rates through shielding the larvae from external predators and other threats they would face in the wild, and allowing far greater numbers to make it to the post-larval life stages.

Once these babies have reached the post-larval life stage they will be safely released into the wild where their chance of survival is far higher 💙
