Our pumpkins and squash haven't fared so well in this year's heatwaves and drought, but we still had a few to harvest 🙂 & we're looking forward to the annual Dorking Pumpkin Show next weekend!

💦 🐦 🦊 🐸 A simple container pond is a great way to help wildlife during the prolonged dry weather and beyond, providing drinking and bathing water for a variety of species.

✅ Find a container to upcycle
✅ Fill with rain water (e.g. a water butt)
✅ Include some oxygenating pond plants
✅ Add a tall emergent plant like an iris for insects to perch
✅ Provide a way out such as a ramp, brick, log or rock

As we witnessed last week with the rare red warning from the Met Office for extreme heat – the human cost of inaction on tackling the climate crisis is becoming increasing evident:

• Extreme heat endangers public health both directly, through heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and indirectly, as several NHS trusts declared critical incidents as operations and appointments were cancelled as MRI scanners and other medical machines failed;
• Critical infrastructure was affected as over 1,200 schools were fully or partially closed;
• Businesses closed due unsafe heat levels causing health concerns for safety of both staff and customers
• Travel was disrupted – with flights and trains cancelled;
• Power outages occurred;
• And the sweltering heat poses an ongoing significant threat to the food system, putting considerable pressure on farmer’s livestock and crops.

The People’s Emergency Briefing is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster last November and is introduced by Chris Packham, featuring well-known personalities such as Deborah Meaden and a range of the British public.

The film will be followed by an open discussion on what we can do together locally. Please book your free place for yourself, friends and neighbours.
