NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2026! 💜

Behind every journey, every smile, and every life changed at Herts Ability, there’s an incredible volunteer making it possible.

This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the amazing people who give their time, energy, and heart to support our community - including the wonderful Graham Lale, whose dedication inspires us every day.

Volunteering is about so much more than giving time. It’s about building friendships, creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and helping people feel connected and valued.

To all of our volunteers: thank you.

Your passion and commitment help us make Hertfordshire a more accessible and inclusive place for everyone.

⭐ Know a volunteer who deserves recognition? Tag them below and share why they’re amazing!

⭐ Thinking about volunteering yourself? There’s never been a better time to get involved and make a difference.

Together, we can create a community where everyone belongs!

Walk to beat dementia

🌞 Keeping People Living with Dementia Safe in the Herts Heatwave! 🌞

An amber heat alert is in place this afternoon, and hot weather can be especially challenging for people living with dementia, increasing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

If you’re supporting someone with dementia, these simple steps can help:

👕 Dress for the weather

Choose light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres to help keep cool.

🏠 Keep the home cool

Close curtains and blinds during the day, especially in south-facing rooms. In the evening, open windows to let cooler air circulate.

☀️ Avoid the hottest part of the day

Try to stay out of direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm. Seek shade whenever possible and remember to reapply sunscreen regularly.

🧊 Find ways to cool down

A cool bath or shower can help. Keep a damp washcloth and some iced water nearby for extra comfort.

💧 Encourage regular fluids

Leave water within easy reach and offer foods with a high water content, such as melon, ice lollies, jelly, soup, and ice cream.

🤝 Check in on loved ones

If you don’t live nearby, ask friends, family members or neighbours to pop in, share a drink, and make sure everything is okay.

📢 Please share this post to help keep people living with dementia safe, comfortable and well during the hot weather.

Research has found that about 40% of people with Parkinson’s disease experience apathy, a motivational disorder in which people have trouble getting interested in daily activities.

In addition to meeting with your doctor to evaluate and optimize PD medications, a regular routine, socialization, taking your medications on time, and avoiding isolation all help manage apathy.

How can a person with PD get motivated to do these things? The key is to have goals that are “SMART.” Learn more about apathy for Mental Health Awareness Month: Parkinson.org/library/fact-sheets/apathy

Mental Health Week is a reminder that our wellbeing matters every day. Let’s take time to check in with ourselves and each other, rest when we need it and speak openly about how we feel . Small acts of kindness, understanding and self-care can make a big difference. You are not alone and support is always important 💜
