Finding somewhere to enjoy the views along the Strawberry Line is important to us. However, these ‘destinations’ need to be accessible to all. So, thanks to funding from Mendip Hills National Landscape we are upgrading viewpoints in Cheddar, Hollybrook, Dulcote and here in Axbridge as well as carrying out other accessibility projects.

The older picture overlooking the river Axe & Brent Knoll looks idyllic, however the site had become heavily overgrown and was inaccessible to wheelchairs and buddies. A new ground pad was constructed over the summer, and the 1st round of new signage to the nearby Lookout Carpark added, where we hope to add dedicated mobility parking slots, in time. Mobility friendly benches are on order, and when finished this will be a truly inclusive destination, for all.

As part of our Promoting Accessibility programme in partnership with Mendip Hills National Landscape two viewpoints alongside Cheddar Reservoir, which act as ‘destinations’ are receiving some much-needed TLC and improvement this autumn.

This will entail replacement of two of the eight benches on this section between Cheddar and Axbridge at viewpoints that had become heavily overgrown over the last few years. The vistas were cleared last winter, along with widening the centrals section of the path by removing fallen trees and excess brush growth – work we always conduct outside the nesting season.

Led by the local branch, volunteers are installing new easier mobility access surfaces along with wheelchair accessible benches. Huge thanks are due to Matt and his team from Winscombe for supporting the local Cheddar volunteers with surface improvements last week. Some of the same volunteers who worked on the recent Congresbury widening project and other surface improvement projects around Shute Shelve tunnel – heroes all of you. The replacement benches are on order and should be installed by the winter. Great collective work, team.

Do look out for similar projects by the respective local volunteers to create ‘destinations’ around viewpoints at Axbridge Lookout, Dulcote and Hollybrook near Westbury SM over the autumn and winter. With more Accessibility projects to follow into 2027. Alongside development of extension projects to help address three of the gaps between Cheddar and Shepton Mallet with Greenways & Cycleroutes Ltd.

All made possible by funding support from our friends at Mendip Hills NL, and Somerset Council for the extension works.

A big thank you 🤩 to our friends at Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun and their race director Stuart Hancock for their generous donation towards maintaining and improving the nearby 🍓 line, used as part of their Park Run route.

With our Trustee, Ade and local volunteer coordinator, Lou there to accept their cheque. 🫶. Local donations like these are automatically ploughed back into the local community who benefit from the work we can fund. Noting a Mendip Hills National Landscape grant last year paid for equipment we used to widen parts of the Cheddar park run route over the winter, and a further grant and this donation will support local plans to replace tired benches and improve accessibility around Cheddar and Axbridge. Certainly supporting the first two of our ‘three Cs’; Connecting Communities in a Conversation corridor.

It’s also great to see the path being used to promote healthy and wellbeing in a sustainable way. Noting that the path is used by ramblers, as well as various walking and running groups from Yatton to Shepton Mallet.

Advance Warning of Path Closure at Easton for Improvement Work. Ebbor Lane to Erlon Lane.

As Greenways continue work on the Phase 2 (of 4) extension towards Haybridge they will be laying tarmac along part of a share private lane. In September or early October.

With the tarmac team on site, Greenways will use the opportunity to improve the existing path surface between Ebbor Lane and Erlon Lane, Easton down through the Easton cutting. This will require closure of this section for short periods.

Please keep an eye out for further Social Mendip post with details and timings.

We apologises for any inconvenience caused, in advance. Any closures will be kept as short as possible.

Britain Favourite Path 2026 – Winners!!! 🥰

We’ve just learned that the 🍓 Line has just been confirmed as ‘Britain Favourite Path 2026’.

A huge, huge honour for everyone involved.🤩🤩

Something we hadn’t expected – but looking back at our social media posts, not really that surprising. When you dig back through all our Facebook posts of the last few years it’s self-evident the level of support for the project from across historic Somerset and more widely. As well as the collective energy among our volunteers, key partners, and friends.

Trustees would like to pay special thanks to Amanda Baldwin for nominating the path in the 1st place. Her stunning image beautifully captures our 🍓 Line ‘three-Cs’, Connecting Communities in a Conservation corridor.

But we should also thank all of you…. each and everyone a 🍓 Line hero, as your support matters..❤️😍🥰

750,000 trips annually tells its own story, alongside 250,000 online supporters who encourage others to come and enjoy the path and share our positive story. A number that grows annually alongside the length of available path. 20-miles of the 29-miles path available to enjoy today, with the longest single stretch extended to 13-miles in 2025. Moreover, at least three gap filling projects are current in development.

Additionally, a HUGE ‘thank you’ for all your positive messages on social media which inspire our volunteers in all weathers to build and maintain this amazing community asset. As well as to North Somerset Council and Somerset Councilthat have been behind this project for close to 50-years and driving an Active Travel agenda to our collective benefit. With our partners, Greenways & Cycleroutes Ltd and support from local business as well as Mendip Hills National Landscape, we are building a legacy asset for the generations to come, to share, access and enjoy.🫶

Proof that we are ‘Better Together’ and we will succeed in completing the path ‘from the Mendips to the Sea’, in time.
