🍓We were delighted to work with The Strawberry Line over the last year. This project was a perfect fit for the Access for All funding from Defra, which is about removing barriers for people who want to visit and enjoy protected landscapes. We are excited to be looking at phase two, to carry on the work even further🍓 Click on the article to find out how the money was used: https://mendiphills-nl.org.uk/2026/06/08/access-funding-for-the-strawberry-line/

Mendip Hills National Landscape Access Funding for the Strawberry Line

The 🍓 Line Society has been able to improve access to the well-known, multi-user path thanks to a £30,000 grant from Mendip Hills National Landscape. The 🍓 Line path runs through the Mendip Hills and along its southern boundary and is the key link for a wide variety of people seeking to enjoy the area.

Opening up safe and easy access to our local countryside is central to the mission of The 🍓 Line Society which works to promote a level off-road route suitable for disabled and able-bodied users. The award was used to enhance the experience of the 🍓 Line, and thereby the experience of the Mendip Hills National Landscape, in the following ways;

1. Improved signage along the path to make access easier, safer and more enjoyable.

2. Publicising the route and potential connections within the Mendip Hills in a range of printed and electronic media.

3. Improving accessibility through repairing and upgrading the path surface with a particular focus on the needs of those with restricted mobility.

4. Working with schools, initially through the Wessex Learning Trust in Cheddar, to engage school pupils in activities linked to the path. Kings Academy and Sixth Form

5. New Interpretation boards with maps that encourage exploration of the Mendip landscape at key access points on the line.

Mick Fletcher, Chair of the 🍓 Line Society, said, ‘The Access for All funding has helped the 🍓 Line advance considerably this year. It has enabled us to make it easier and safer to use the path and encouraged a wider group of users to explore the countryside including many who may have struggled before. Supporting our volunteers and enabling us to upgrade our tools to low carbon rechargeable power tools and communications to the wider public has also helped hugely. We now have a membership of 450, and in the region 110 active volunteers, covering over 29 miles. I’d like to thank them all personally for delivering this project.’

Jim Hardcastle, manager of the Mendip Hills National Landscape team, said, ‘I’m really pleased we’ve now got the funds from Defra to support important initiatives like the 🍓 Line. It’s such a success story for the area, made even more impressive by the fact that so much of it is community driven. We can see how the money has made a real difference and look forward to supporting the Society with a similar grant this year as well.’

The National Landscape team have been awarded funds from Defra to make these nationally important landscapes accessible so that a wider variety of people can benefit from them.

If you are reviewing our main website you may notice two new developments as of May.

A new ‘Code of Conduct’ page and ‘Exploring our Landscape’ page.

‘Exploring our Landscape’ helps you with Accessibility. What to find and where plus how to explore the Mendip Hills National Landscape. We will grow this page slowly with new features and attributes.

But even its launch format it should still help you with improved accessibility around our path. Including the ‘Landscape beneath your feet.

The Code of Conduct page promotes the same details on safe sharing of the path contained signs all along the path.

Look our for new Trail Leaflets this summer 🥰.

Did you know you can now enjoy 13 continuous miles of path from North End, Yatton through to Petruth Paddocks Camping, Cheddar thanks to two extension. So next time you get to Yatton station, look for signs to Lampley Road and keep going! GWR

Where from North End, you can link on bike towards the P2P Way and NCR 33 on to Clevedon and south to Weston SM. Thanks to work by North Somerset Council 🥰 Creating more opportunities to enjoy improved accessibility to our region and wider landscape.

Look out for new 🍓 line signage in 2026 that will help users follow the interim route to Lampley Road.

In total, you can enjoy 20 miles of the 29-mile 🍓 line route, where we are working hard to close the remaining gaps with key partners.

WARNING - NO CYCLE ACCESS BEYOND BEACONSFIELD FARM GATE, EASTON

Just a reminder, the short 400m extension at Easton is a dead-end to cyclist and mobility users. [until we extend]. Sorry.

Please don’t go beyond the kissing gate. It’s PRIVATE LAND.

Please please please respect that beyond the current kissing gate is private land with NO PUBLIC RIGHT OF ACCESS.

Permitted PEDESTRIAN ONLY access (to link to a public footpath 800m away) is granted by the grace of landowner. The same landowner we need for our extension….

There is no way through for cyclists beyond the gate, and people ignoring the signs are threatening future extension to Wells. That includes cutting wire to go around the gate 🥲.

Please spread this simple message.

The Eaton extension is not a through route for cyclists (yet). And if we don’t respect it, it never will. TYVM.

A productive morning clearing the vegetation back from the Strawberry Line in Axbridge on the corner of Racurium Cottage Lane where it meets the A371.

Four local volunteers were there for about 3 hours and at least 80 people on bikes or walking passed by on this busy link section.

It was good to get it done on this tricky crossing point, at Axbridge. Thanks to Rob and his small dedicated team.

Where the local group is looking for more volunteers in Axbridge to help maintain the route across the Town.

Installation of the first permanent bench at our new Hollybrook nature reserve and movement of the temporary bench to the second site is done.

However still lots more to do to complete the upper path, fit for mobility access over the summer.

Improved accessibility is a huge priority for the 🍓 line and our partner Mendip Hills National Landscape as well as creating attractive destinations and promoting biodiversity.
