Summer Photography Competition Winner 2026

Thank you to everyone who participated by voting, sharing, commenting, and entering the competition. The level of engagement has been exceptional, and we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the incredible photographs that captured the beauty of our sites over the summer months.

The overall winner was decided by combining votes from both Facebook and Instagram. Following a review of the final votes, we are delighted to announce the winner:

Thank you to all who entered the Summer Photography competition, it was lovely seeing everyone explore our greenspaces in the summer sunshine.

Celebrating World Ranger Day: Meet our Ranger of the Year, Julie Reid

This World Ranger Day, we're celebrating the dedicated people who connect communities with nature, protect precious green spaces and inspire future generations.

One of those people is Julie Reid, Community Ranger at Deadwater Valley Trust. Julie's journey into conservation proves there is no single route into the sector and that it's never too late to follow your passion. From careers in retail, food and drink, and childcare, to discovering Forest School through volunteering, every experience helped shape the ranger she is today.

Now, nearly eight years into her role, Julie spends her days engaging local communities, delivering environmental education, supporting practical conservation work and helping care for award-winning greenspaces such as Hogmoor Inclosure.

As Julie says: "It's not just a job, it's a passion."

Her story is a powerful reminder that diverse experiences, lifelong learning and determination can lead to a rewarding career in conservation.

📸 There's just under 2 weeks left to enter our Summer Photography Competition!

It's been fantastic to see all the entries submitted to our photography competition so far. Many thanks to Matthew Cardy who sent the attached image from Knowle Haven. Showing a Common Blue butterfly delicately resting among the morning dew, thriving in one of our greenspaces. Did you know during the caterpillar stage, this species secretes a sugar-rich liquid that attracts ants. The ants feed on this nectar and, in return, protect the caterpillar from predators, which eventually turns into the stunning butterfly you can see in the photograph!

🌿 Greenspace Spotlight: Haig, Cumbria

From coal pit to coastal gem. Once home to Cumbria's largest coal mine, Haig has undergone an incredible transformation into a thriving greenspace where nature, heritage and stunning sea views come together.

Today, visitors can wander dramatic clifftop trails, take in breathtaking views across the Irish Sea and spot coastal wildlife including puffins and razorbills. 🐦🌊

Since transferring to the Land Trust in 2008, this former industrial site has become a fantastic example of how brownfield land can be reimagined for people, wildlife and future generations. Cared for by the National Trust, National Trust North West Haig now offers a unique place to explore, connect with nature and discover Cumbria's rich industrial heritage.

Protect Our Greenspaces
Prevent Wildfires

Did you know? In England, an average of 26,500 fires start on grassland, heathland and moorland every year, that's around 73 fires every day.

As temperatures rise, our parks, woodlands and open spaces become more vulnerable to fire. You can help protect local wildlife, habitats and communities by following a few simple steps:
Do not light fires or barbecues in parks or open spaces
Dispose of cigarette ends responsibly
Take your litter home, glass can magnify sunlight and ignite dry grass

If you spot a fire:
🚨 Leave the area immediately and encourage others to do the same
📞 Call 999 without delay, don't assume someone else has reported it
📍 Use the Ordnance Survey app or what3words to provide an accurate location
🚫 Do not travel to the fire, as this may hinder emergency services

Together, we can help keep our greenspaces safe this summer.

🐝🦗Do you know what a Bioblitz is?

The Land Trust team recently joined Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for a Bioblitz, a fun wildlife survey where people work together to identify and record as many species as possible in a set area and time.

This wasn’t just any Bioblitz, it was one of 496 Bioblitzes organised or facilitated by the Land Trust this year, helping communities connect with nature while building a better understanding of the wildlife that shares our green spaces.
