From local parks and green spaces to the wildlife around us, nature plays a vital role in our everyday lives.

But habitats are under pressure. Pollution, waste, and climate change are all impacting biodiversity and the health of our environment.

Simple actions like recycling food waste, reducing litter, and respecting green spaces help protect ecosystems and the species that depend on them.

When communities come together, even small efforts can help restore and protect the natural world for future generations.

Looking after our environment is not just about today. It is about creating a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.

Take action in your local area and help protect the spaces and wildlife we all depend on.

Your garden waste doesn’t have to end up in landfill. By composting leaves, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, and other plant material, you can

* Reduce household and council waste
* Improve soil health naturally
* Support a thriving garden ecosystem

It’s easy to get started!

Simply layer green (grass, vegetable scraps) and brown (leaves, twigs) materials, keep it moist, and turn regularly.

In just a few months, you’ll have rich compost ready to nourish your plants.

Who else is supporting No Mow May this year? Using resources from Plantlife, this simple action is all about doing less to support more nature.

By pausing mowing this May, you allow wildflowers like daisies, dandelions and clover to grow, providing vital food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

With 97% of flower-rich meadows lost since the 1930s, our lawns have never been more important. There are around 23 million gardens in the UK, so even the smallest patch can add up to a huge impact for biodiversity.

Did you know that longer grass can also help tackle pollution, store carbon in the soil and support a wider range of wildlife?

So this bank holiday pop your mower away, let it grow, and be part of the movement.

Freshwater and urban environments are more connected than they seem. Pesticides used on streets, parks and pavements don’t just stay there. Agricultural runoff from farms doesn’t either.

Both move through the same network of drains, soils, rivers and streams, shaping the health of the UK’s entire freshwater system.

Across the UK, most rivers are not in good ecological healt at all. Pollution from chemicals, fertilisers, slurry, plastic and urban pesticide use is putting pressure on wildlife and reducing biodiversity across the landscapes we all rely on.

But this isn’t happening in isolation, and neither is the solution.

From pesticide-free streets to nature-friendly farming, from buffer strips along rivers to restoring wetlands, there are practical ways to reduce pollution at every level. What happens in our neighbourhoods and on our farmland adds up to the condition of our rivers downstream.

Protecting freshwater means acting together across streets, rivers and wider land use. Every change, local or national, strengthens the same system.

Cleaner streets. Healthier rivers. Stronger ecosystems. All connected, all shared responsibility.

The climate and nature crisis is accelerating, and current UK law does not go far enough to stop it.

Nature is still in decline, emissions are not reducing fast enough, and the systems meant to protect us are just not joined up.

That is why the Zero Hour campaign is pushing for the Climate and Nature Bill, a proposed law designed by scientists, experts, and campaigners to tackle climate breakdown and biodiversity loss together.

The stats are strong, it would
• Cut emissions in line with 1.5°C
• Reverse biodiversity loss by 2030
• Bring citizens into the decision-making process
Backed by over 150 parliamentarians and more than 2,800 organisations, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, it is one of the most comprehensive attempts to fix the crisis at its root.

Thankfully, public support is growing, with over 75,000 people already signed on. This is not just about awareness anymore. It is about turning pressure into law.

Please do join the campaign and add your voice to the Climate and Nature Bill today https://action.zerohour.uk/nebriefing

Agricultural pollution is one of the biggest and most overlooked threats to the UK’s freshwater.

Runoff from fertilisers, farm slurry and pesticides washes into rivers and streams, especially after rainfall. This creates a toxic “chemical cocktail” that damages habitats, fuels algal blooms, and reduces oxygen levels in the water, harming wildlife and entire ecosystems. In fact, agricultural pollution affects around 40% of water bodies in England.

It is also a major reason why no rivers in England, Wales or Northern Ireland are in high ecological health. But thankfully there is a clear path forward.

Simple, proven solutions can make a big difference. Planting buffer strips along waterways helps absorb and filter pollution before it reaches rivers. Reducing pesticide use and switching to less harmful alternatives protects both wildlife and water quality. Better manure management and healthier soils can also dramatically cut runoff from farms.

Restoring wetlands and giving rivers more space to flow naturally can further reduce pollution and rebuild thriving ecosystems.
We already know what works.

So with the right support for farmers and stronger action, we can reduce agricultural pollution and bring our rivers back to life.
Please do join us in pushing for cleaner rivers and stronger action on agricultural pollution. Add your voice, support nature-friendly farming, and help protect the UK’s freshwater for the future.
