HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY SIR DAVID!

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY SIR DAVID!

Happy 100th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough.

His incredible career has taken him across the world, and luckily for us, also here to ‘Visit Monmouthshire’. A few years ago he was walking through the bluebells in Colonel's Park Wood (near Trellech) and crouching alongside a Lower Wye Valley stream observing the White Throated Dippers for The Secret World of Sound (episode 2, "Love and Rivals").

A Monmouthshire cameraman , was lucky enough to meet him at the time and said “He’s been such a driving force for so many people who care for the natural world, and you just can’t help but be awe‑inspired by him.”

More recently you can also hear Sir David narrating on BBC Secret Garden – The Wye Valley filmed in Monmouthshire.

Thank you, Sir David, for bringing the joy and wonder of the natural world into our homes, and happy birthday!

Massive thanks to ©Gavin Thurston for this photo.

A Journey Along the Old Railways - Usk Civic Society Spring Talk

A well‑attended audience filled The Sessions House on Wednesday 15 April for the latest Usk Civic Society Spring Talk, where railway enthusiast and historian Max Moebus delivered a richly illustrated and warmly received exploration of the old railways from Chepstow to Monmouth and beyond.

Over the course of the evening, Max guided attendees through the story of the Wye Valley and Monmouthshire’s railway network, tracing its rise, purpose and legacy. His talk highlighted how these lines once shaped the region’s industry, communities, and transport links, weaving together engineering feats, social history, and the quirks and characters that brought the railways to life.

The audience enjoyed a fascinating journey through lost stations, vanished branch lines, and the landscapes they once served. Max’s deep knowledge and infectious enthusiasm made the history feel immediate and alive — a real treat for railway lovers and local historians alike.

Usk Civic Society extends warm thanks to Max for an excellent evening, and to everyone who joined us for this memorable Spring Talk.

USK CIVIC SOCIETY CONSERVATION AWARDS

The Usk Civic Society, as part of the AGM, hosted its annual Conservation Awards Ceremony, an event dedicated to celebrating exceptional contributions to the preservation and enhancement of the town’s unique heritage. This year’s award goes to the Morris Family in recognition of their remarkable restoration of 12 Porthycarne Street, formerly known to many as the much‑loved Sweets Fishing Tackle Shop.

Their thoughtful and meticulous work in returning the building to a beautiful family home has not only safeguarded an important piece of Usk’s architectural history but has also enriched the character of the town for residents and visitors alike. The project stands as a shining example of how care, craftsmanship, and community pride can breathe new life into historic spaces.

The Morris Family’s dedication embodies the very spirit of conservation, ensuring that Usk’s charm and heritage continue to thrive for generations to come. Their achievement is both inspiring and greatly appreciated.

Thank you for helping keep Usk’s heritage alive.

Our thanks too to Tim Ryan for his thoroughly entertaining talk on the Severn Ferries and for bringing along the model replica of the Severn Princess Ferry. Recording of the talk is available using this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyvtgfbYiGE
