An update on our fundraising activities:
We've now raised £56,000 in funds, and with the grants offered to us by various organisations we have over £80,000 of the £132,000 required to restore our bells.
Unfortunately, we also need to move the church organ from the first floor of the tower and restore it at a cost of £190,000, and the top of the church tower needs repairing too.
We'll soon be working with the rest of the church community to hopefully get everything completed together as phases of a much larger church reorganisation project, but in the meanwhile we're plodding on with our regular fundraising activities.

THE DOCTOR & THE BEAST

The Beast of Broseley has faced many strange visitors over the years, from flower-picking children to wandering pipers, not to mention the local residents. However, none were stranger than the curly-haired traveller who arrived one misty evening in a blue police box.

The mysterious man introduced himself only as "The Doctor" and spent several hours investigating reports of unexplained hoofprints around the Fiery Fields. Witnesses later reported seeing him offering jelly babies to sheep, hedges, and at one point, a startled milk cart horse.

Convinced the Beast was an alien lifeform, the Doctor waited until midnight beneath an old oak tree. Sure enough, a great white shape emerged from the darkness, its horn gleaming in the moonlight.

The Doctor attempted to negotiate.

"Would you care for a jelly baby?" he asked.

The Beast would not.

What happened next is unclear. Some claim there was a dramatic chase across the fields. Others insist the Doctor tried to hypnotise the creature using a yo-yo. One particularly unreliable witness swears the Beast became annoyed after being mistaken for a horse.

Whatever the truth, the following morning the blue police box was found abandoned beside a pile of half-eaten apples. The Doctor himself was nowhere to be seen.

Local legend maintains that the Beast of Broseley triumphed in the encounter and made short work of the Fourth Doctor. Although most sensible people dismiss such stories, villagers still report hearing a distant voice on windy nights muttering, "Would you like a jelly baby?" before the sound of thundering hooves echoes across the Fiery Fields.

And so, like the Pied Piper before him, the Fourth Doctor became another cautionary tale.

Should you venture into the Fiery Fields after dark, remember the old advice: bring apples for the Beast, and leave the jelly babies at home.

THE LEGEND OF THE BROSELEY PIED PIPER

You've all probably heard of, or even seen, the Beast of Broseley who prowls the Fiery Fields, but have you heard the legend of the Broseley Pied Piper?

Long ago, after leaving Hamlyn with no money, the Pied Piper walked despondently for days before arriving in the small town of Broseley.
Unfortunately for the town’s population, but fortunately from the Piper’s point of view, the town at that time was overrun with rats.

Overjoyed to have the opportunity to demonstrate his skills once more, the Pied Piper played his pipe melodiously and the rats, mesmerised by the sweet sound, followed the Piper out of the town and down the hill to the nearby village of Jackfield. The people of Broseley were overjoyed, and, unusually, paid the Piper generously for his efforts.

A few days later, when the Broseley Beast spirited some children away from the town, the Piper was all too pleased to try to help the townsfolk. He picked up his pipe and headed towards Fiery Fields.

The Piper blew into his pipe with all his might, trying to entice the children out of their trance and back to their families. Unfortunately, his actions enraged the Beast, who thundered out of his dark hiding place to confront the Piper. The Piper ran for his life.

As for the children, they were snapped out of their reverie and were able to sneak back to their parents during the commotion. It’s not clear whether the parents were pleased with this turn of events.

The Piper found himself cornered, and fought to defend himself, but he was no match for the Beast, and the unfortunate Piper was skewered on the unicorn’s horn.

Some people say the ghost of the Pied Piper still wanders the Fiery Fields, and on a still evening you may just hear a haunting melody, followed by the sound of thundering hooves.

THE LEGEND OF THE BEAST OF BROSELEY

The Beast of Broseley is rumoured to roam the Fiery Fields on a full moon. If you find yourself alone there as dusk is falling, try not to think about the fires that burned under the ground there for years, and in particular, whatever you do, don't think about The Beast!

Legend has it that a girl disappeared after going to the Fiery Fields to pick flowers for her mother. After a week of desperate searching, she was eventually found asleep in the fields, next to a felled oak tree.

The girl could not remember what happened while she was away. All she could remember was that a large white beast had appeared in front of her, then lead her into a dark place full of apples, where she had fallen asleep.
Some people believe that The Beast of Broseley (or BOB for short) escaped from a zoo or a private collection. A few conclude that Bob is a species of wild horse believed to have become extinct in Britain hundreds of years ago. Others, after hearing sounds of neighing and screams in the night, are inclined to believe that BOB is a paranormal entity. Meanwhile, the sightings continue…

Should you encounter The Beast of Broseley, make sure you offer him his favourite treat of an apple or two. And whatever you do, don't attempt to ride him.

Congratulations to Ben, one of two learners who have been coming to Broseley from Cardington for some extra tuition.

Ben has achieved Level 1 in the Learning the Ropes scheme.

Ben and our other Cardington visitor Sarah are now working towards their Level certificates.
