What an entertaining evening we had with Carolyn Vanstone! This was her second visit to Taunton and she introduced us to five more Women of Influence. Grace Darling was the first, followed by Amy Johnson and her yellow plane, Jason. Mary Quant was depicted in bright orange gladioli and gerberas and we rounded off the evening with a picnic with Princess Diana. The fifth woman of influence was Madge, a homeless lady whom Carolyn befriended and about whom she spoke very movingly.
We all enjoyed Carolyn’s lighthearted and fun approach to flower arranging and she reminded us of how precious life is and how it is to be enjoyed. We certainly enjoyed her fresh take on floral art. Thank you, Carolyn and I hope storm Austen didn’t stop you getting home to Southampton safely.

We had a lovely evening on Tuesday, creating vertical parallel designs - and celebrating Alma’s 90th birthday. Who says flower arranging doesn’t keep you young?!
After we’d discussed the arrangements, Germaine talked us through next month’s design, a still life. She brought along a variety of artefacts which would help create a harmonious arrangement/design.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 10th November at 7pm at Trull Hall.

After what seemed a very long break, members of Taunton Flower Club were pleased to be back last week and we were treated a lovely seasonal demonstration from Germaine Smith with her Autumn Kaleidoscope. Beautiful designs and wonderful autumn colours decorated the stage and we were also treated to tales of her walks in the woods during which she collected beautiful pieces of wood - it would seem demonstrators risk life and limb for their art!! Thank you Germaine for a wonderful evening during which we learnt a lot about design and colour.
Our next demonstration is on October 22nd.

And now it’s autumn!
We celebrated the beginning of the season with lovely autumnal designs and what struck us all was how different they all were. Colours, accessories and plant material all contributed to this.
Our design next month is a Vertical Parallel and Germaine gave us a masterclass in how to achieve this. We are very fortunate to have her expertise in the group.
We next meet on Tuesday 13th October.

Last night Fun with Flowers went to the seaside! And once again our group came up with a whole range of ideas to depict a seascape. Shells, seaweed, lobster pots and coral featured in the designs as well as carefully selected flowers and foliage chosen for their colour and form. Star of the evening, however, was Lorraine’s cat’s fishy toy!
Saranna then gave us ideas for next month’s Autumn arrangements - grasses, wheat and vibrant flowers to depict the next season. It was hard to think of autumn on such a hot and sticky evening!

Congratulations to all club members who entered the Taunton Flower Show, in particular Fleur White who won best in show and Rhys Parry Williams, Jackie Crouch and Germaine Smith who all won first prizes. Taunton Flower Club won first prize in the club class - well done to Rose, Angela and Maggi who depicted Jilly Cooper’s The Rivals in flowers. Nicky Heal also won first prize in the floristry section.
A wonderful display of floral art doesn’t just happen by chance so thank you to Michele who organised the section. It all ran like clockwork thanks to her and her team of stewards.
There was huge interest in making of floral crowns and these could be seen on lots of visitors wearing them round the show ground. Thank you to Nicky for providing the flowers and expertise and his team of helpers.

Well, what a night to remember! Ian Lloyd gave us a spectacular evening with Magic of the Musicals and it was truly magical. From Sunset Boulevard to Sister Act, each arrangement depicted a musical or opera and as he put the finishing touches to each one we were treated to an excerpt with wonderful singers such as Barbara Streisand and Dame Kiri De Kanawa. My Fair Lady was a true extravaganza of wonderful summer flowers which only just fitted on the stage and definitely had the wow factor. The vibrant reds of Les Misérables depicting the barricades was in stark contrast to the soothing green and whites of Madame Butterfly, accompanied by the famous humming chorus. A South Pacific inspired hand tied and a long low table arrangement (Beauty and the Beast) done in test tubes with sweet peas and a gorgeous clematis ‘Kiev’ were two of the more modest (!) designs.
Ian’s love of flowers and music shone through every arrangement - truly a master of his craft.
We hope you’ll come back to Taunton in the not too distant future.

A late addition!

A meadow arrangement was exactly right for a warm summer evening. Garden flowers, grasses, ‘weeds’, and items gathered from the roadside and hedgerows all contributed to some lovely light and airy designs.
Next month (August 11th) continues the summer scene with a seascape.
But before that, it’s Taunton Flower Show so do think about entering or coming along (7th and 8th August)
