Wow! Yesterday, while monitoring birds on Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, we were lucky enough to ring this absolutely stunning male Cuckoo.

To think this incredible bird has travelled all the way from Africa to the UK for such a short stay is truly remarkable. Nature never fails to amaze 🐦✨

Cuckoos are famous for their distinctive call and extraordinary migration journeys, making every sighting feel incredibly special.

What a breathtaking bird!

πŸŒ™βœ¨ This time of year is pure magic on the stunning Cannock Chase with the return of the incredible Nightjars.

Their haunting, almost alien call echoing across the heathland is something you never forget. A true forest and heathland specialist, these birds are one of nature’s hidden treasures. πŸ–€πŸŒ²

Last night, while monitoring these fantastic birds, we ringed one new individual and also recaptured another that had been ringed in 2025 as a chick 🐣 , returning to the very same site after its remarkable journey back from Africa. An amazing reminder of just how extraordinary migration really is. πŸŒπŸ•ŠοΈ

How much of the natural world do we miss when we’re not there? πŸ‘€

A recent visitor to our Sand Martin bank appeared to mistake one of our plastic decoys for the real thing, a fascinating interaction we would never have witnessed without our ZEISS Birding trail cam. (Not on HD setting)

Moments like this remind us how much is happening across our sites, even when no one is watching.

We love discovering and learning more about the behaviours and interactions taking place in these spaces every day. 🌿

Is there anything more stunning than a Nuthatch nest? πŸ‚πŸ¦

During our monitoring work, we discovered not one, but TWO nest boxes filled with Nuthatch chicks, and just look at the craftsmanship of these incredible birds. Their nests were beautifully lined with individual pieces of scotch pine bark, carefully arranged into a perfect natural cradle.

Tiny architects. Incredible detail. Pure woodland magic. 🌿✨

Moments like these are a reminder of just how extraordinary nature can be.πŸ’š

πŸ¦… A very mixed year for our Urban Peregrines so far, with some success stories and some disappointments along the way.

The good news? One of our Staffordshire pairs has successfully hatched 4 healthy chicks, and they’re all doing brilliantly! πŸ’›

It’s incredible to think that these tiny fluffballs will grow into the fastest animals on Earth, capable of reaching speeds of over 200mph during a hunting dive. Absolutely wow! ⚑

Nature never stops amazing us, and we’ll be cheering these little ones on as they continue to grow strong. πŸͺΆ

🐦✨ Migration never ceases to amaze us!

This morning, while monitoring Pied Flycatcher nests, we caught a breeding female that already had a ring on her leg. After checking the records, we discovered she had been ringed as a chick in a nest box back in 2025, just 9km away RSPB Coombe Valley Nature Reserve!

What makes this even more incredible is that this tiny bird has already completed her epic migration journey to and from West Africa, before returning here to breed. πŸŒπŸ’«

Moments like this are a fantastic reminder of the resilience and wonder of migratory birds, and why long-term monitoring and conservation work are so important.

Nature truly is extraordinary. πŸ’š
