Issue 09 : What is Total Communication?

Last week, we explored how communication is much more than spoken words. This week, we're looking at how we can support every child to communicate with confidence.

Total Communication is an approach that recognises there is no single "right" way to communicate. Instead, it encourages adults to use a range of methods—including speech, gestures, facial expressions, Makaton, symbols, photographs, visual supports and body language - to help children both understand others and express themselves.

Research shows that children learn best when communication is clear, consistent and accessible. When adults reinforce spoken language with visual or physical cues, children are better able to understand routines, follow instructions, learn new vocabulary and become increasingly independent.

Importantly, Total Communication isn't just for children with additional support needs. Visual timetables help all children know what is happening next. Makaton reinforces spoken language. Choice boards encourage independence. Consistent gestures support understanding. Together, these approaches create environments where every child feels confident, included and able to participate.

💙 What does this mean at Springholm Nursery?
At Springholm Nursery, we're developing a Total Communication approach because we want every child to have the tools they need to communicate successfully. By combining speech with visual supports, Makaton, symbols and responsive interactions, we're creating an environment where every child can understand, express themselves and thrive.

✨ Next week, the holidays are over! We'll begin sharing how Total Communication looks in practice at Springholm Nursery, starting with one of the simplest but most powerful tools we use every day.

🌈 LOOKING AHEAD… BUILDING ON OUR COMMUNICATION JOURNEY 🤟💬
Earlier this week, we shared Issue 08 of our Research Series – Communication is More Than Words, exploring the many different ways children communicate and why every child needs to feel heard, understood and able to express themselves.

So… what happens next? 💙
After the October holidays, we'll be bringing that research to life and sharing more of what Total Communication actually looks like here at Springholm Nursery.

🤟 We'll show how we use Makaton and gesture alongside spoken language – not as something separate, but as a natural part of everyday nursery life.

👀 We'll take a closer look at the visual supports you'll see throughout our environment, from visual timetables and now/next boards to symbols, photographs, labels and choice boards – and explain why they matter.
🗣️ We'll share how language develops through play, conversation, stories, songs, STEM adventures and all those everyday interactions that happen naturally throughout the nursery day.

💚 And we'll continue to show how our Total Communication approach brings all of these things together, giving children different ways to understand, make choices, express themselves and connect with the people around them.

Families will continue to be an important part of that journey too. Through our Family Makaton sessions and the resources and ideas we share, we hope to make it easier to use some of these approaches beyond nursery as well.

Because Total Communication isn't about finding one way for children to communicate.

It's about giving them every possible way to have a voice. 💙
We can't wait to share more after the holidays!
Children's voices. Children's choices.

Issue 08 – Communication is More Than Words

When we think about communication, we often think about talking. But communication begins long before children say their first words and continues in many different ways throughout life.

From birth, children communicate through eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, body language, sounds and play. As they grow, they begin to use words alongside signs, symbols, pictures and other forms of expression. Every smile, point, glance and gesture is a child telling us something important.

Research tells us that children develop communication most effectively when adults recognise and respond to all of these attempts to communicate. Feeling listened to and understood helps children develop confidence, build secure relationships and lay the foundations for language, literacy and lifelong learning.

This is why many early years settings are embracing a Total Communication approach. Rather than relying on spoken language alone, Total Communication uses a range of communication methods—including gestures, Makaton, visual supports, symbols, photographs and spoken language—to help every child understand and be understood.

Importantly, these approaches don't only support children with additional needs. Research shows they benefit all children by making routines clearer, reducing anxiety, encouraging independence and helping children participate more confidently in everyday experiences.

💙 What does this mean at Springholm Nursery?
At Springholm Nursery, we believe every child deserves to have their voice heard, whatever form that voice takes. Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing how our Total Communication journey is helping children communicate with confidence, make choices, understand their environment and develop the skills they need to thrive.

✨ Next week we'll explore what Total Communication actually looks like in practice and why using many different ways to communicate helps every child succeed.

🌈💙 What a fantastic first term! 💙🌈

And just like that, we're at the October holidays! 🥰

We've had so much fun this term, from STEM adventures, Maths Week Scotland and Bookbug sessions to outdoor exploring, creative activities, community cafés and our wonderful intergenerational skills sharing workshops! 🌳🎨🔍

We hope to see lots of you there! We're especially excited to see some of our children singing in the choir to open the Gala, followed by our wonderful attendants to the Gala King and Queen! 👑💙

🌻 And don't forget our scarecrow! 🌻

Our children have been busy using their colourful handprints to create a beautiful community tree, showing how little hands can make a big difference! 🖐️🌳 We're so proud of their teamwork and creativity!

🗳️ We're NUMBER 2 when it comes to voting, so we'd love your support!

A huge thank you to all our children, families and wider community for another wonderful term! Enjoy the holidays, and we'll hopefully see lots of you tomorrow! 💙

🤠💙 Sharing skills, making connections and dancing together!

On Tuesday, we welcomed the wonderful Val McGoldrick to Springholm Nursery for a country dance workshop as part of our community skills-sharing programme! 🎶

The children listened to the music, thought about how they could move their bodies and practised dance steps together. Following movements and putting steps into a sequence gave them opportunities to develop coordination, balance, listening and memory—with plenty of room to express themselves along the way! 👣

Experiences like these bring learning to life. Trying something new, practising and joining in together helps children build confidence and discover the enjoyment of music and movement. Having someone from our community share their skills also shows children that we can learn from people of all ages. 💙

The dancing didn’t stop at nursery! Val and Amy then headed over to Springholm Primary School to share the experience with the P1–4 children, extending this lovely opportunity across our nursery and school community. 🏫✨

A huge thank you to Val for generously sharing her time, talent and enthusiasm. What a wonderful way to bring people together—through music, movement and a shared love of dancing! 🤠🎶

If your child is interested in taking up country dancing, Val teaches in Castle Douglas on Thursday evenings. Please see the flyer in the photos for more details! 👣💙

🌿 Springholm Nursery Research Series
Issue 07 – Research in Action: Freedom with Guidance

On Monday, we explored Froebel’s principle of **Freedom with Guidance** – the idea that children need genuine freedom to explore, make choices, solve problems and follow their own ideas, while being supported by knowledgeable adults who know when to step in… and when to step back.

At Springholm Nursery, we see this balance throughout our day.

✨ Freedom to choose
Children have time and space to make decisions about their own play – choosing resources, following their interests and developing their own ideas rather than always working towards an adult-planned outcome.

🌱 Adults who observe first
Our practitioners spend time watching, listening and getting to know what children are trying to achieve. Sometimes the most powerful thing an adult can do is give a child the time to work something out for themselves.

💬 Guidance at the right moment
When an adult does join the play, it is with purpose – perhaps introducing new vocabulary, asking a carefully chosen question, modelling a skill, offering another resource or helping a child think through a problem.

🧩 Learning through challenge
We don't want to remove every difficulty. With encouragement and appropriate support, children have opportunities to persevere, experiment, assess risk and experience the satisfaction of discovering, *“I can do it!”*

🤝 Freedom within a community
Freedom does not mean having no boundaries. Children are supported to understand how their choices affect others, care for our resources and environment, negotiate with friends and increasingly manage their own behaviour.

This is Freedom with Guidance in action: not adults directing children's learning, and not adults simply standing back, but skilled practitioners working alongside children – protecting their freedom while knowing when a little guidance can open up a whole new possibility. 💙

🌿 Springholm Nursery Research Series
Issue 07 – The Froebelian Approach: Freedom with Guidance

Children thrive when they have the freedom to explore—but they also need caring adults to guide, inspire and extend their learning.
One of the final principles of the Froebelian approach is Freedom with Guidance. Froebel believed children should have opportunities to make choices, follow their interests and become active participants in their own learning. However, he also recognised that skilled adults play an essential role in helping children discover new possibilities.

Children can only become interested in experiences they have had the opportunity to encounter. They don't know what they don't yet know. This is why practitioners carefully introduce new ideas, resources, environments and experiences that spark curiosity and open the door to further learning.

Research shows that children learn most effectively when adults strike the right balance between listening to children's interests and thoughtfully extending them. Sometimes this means following a child's fascination with insects or construction. At other times, it means introducing something completely new—perhaps a musical instrument, an artist, a scientific investigation or a visit to a woodland they have never explored before.

At Springholm Nursery, our practitioners carefully observe children's interests while creating rich opportunities that broaden their experiences and inspire new learning. We ask thoughtful questions, model new skills, introduce exciting resources and gently challenge children to think differently. In doing so, we help children develop confidence, independence, curiosity and resilience.

Freedom with guidance isn't about adults taking over, nor is it about leaving children entirely to their own devices. It is about working alongside children—valuing their ideas while helping them discover a world of possibilities they may never have found alone.

As we come to the end of our Froebelian series, we hope you've enjoyed discovering the philosophy behind our practice and gained a deeper understanding of the research that shapes everyday life at Springholm Nursery.

💙 Next week, we'll begin a brand-new research theme as we continue sharing the thinking behind children's learning.

🌿 What a lovely end to another busy week at Springholm Nursery! 🌿

Today has been full of learning, creating and plenty of excitement as we prepared to welcome some very special visitors for our Grandparents Afternoon. 💛

👩‍🍳 Little bakers at work!
The children rolled up their sleeves and helped to make both scones and cheese scones ready to share with our grandparents this afternoon. There was lots of measuring, mixing, rolling and cutting – and, of course, some very important discussions about how delicious they were going to be! 😋

🚀 STEM Adventures – Mae Jemison
We also enjoyed our latest STEM Adventures session, learning about the incredible Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space. The children explored ideas around space, astronauts and what it might be like to travel beyond Earth. 🌍✨ We love using inspiring people to show our children that curiosity, determination and big dreams can take you anywhere!

🌈 Exploring our emotions with The Colour Monster
We have also been thinking about our feelings using The Colour Monster. The children explored different emotions, talked about how they might make our bodies feel and began to think about ways we can recognise and express our feelings. 💛💙❤️💚

From baking and space exploration to understanding our emotions, it's been another week packed with meaningful learning through play.

And what better way to finish it than welcoming our grandparents and special grown-ups into nursery this afternoon! 🥰

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! 💙
