Wormeries a such a great addition to community gardens and the children visiting Lochmaben Community Gardens will have so much fun with theirs!

Great community team effort and partnership working to get it installed!

Huge thanks and a grateful “Shoutout” to Wheatley Homes South NETS team who sprang into action today, relocating our Wormery Box to its new home at the Community Garden.

Dawn was out this morning visiting ECCLEFECHAN DAY CENTRE and what and amazing food initiative it is! She met with Allison and Alex whose passion shines out!

DG Community Food Network will be supporting them to create a community garden in the space outside to grow food for the lunch club and meals on wheels services, with any surplus to be shared in the community. Looks set to be a brilliant addition to this already vital food service!

Look out for their Good Food Story in a few weeks to find out more about the great work they do.

Dawn went out to the Moniaive Community Compost site today to help introduce the Jora composter to the children at Moniaive Primary school who are collecting peelings and plate waste as part of this great pilot!

The youngest volunteers had a great time learning about the importance of composting and getting hands on measuring and adding waste, checking moisture and temperature (it was steaming as you can see in the video below!) and giving the Jora a good spin.

Waste from the school and the community went into the composter but they also took out some spent vegetation from the raised beds in the community garden and added that too - amazing example of this waste being turned to compost that will go back on that same bed to help this years food to grow!

We had lots of fun feeding the worms in the wormery and collecting the compost tea to feed the veg growing in the community garden. The day ended with the compost song which was mainly Dawn and Katie but shared as promised 😂.

Well done everyone 🌱

Propagator Denis was at the Green Fayre in Newton Stewart inviting people to make their own omlette using local ingredients: foraged nettles, suie fields eggs, ethical dairy cheese (thanks to the galloway food hub stall!)

This was a taster session for a cooking lessons pilot we are planning with Newton Stewart Initiative. He also surveyed people about what Good Food means to them to support our regional Good Food Nation plan.

This looks great!

This looks great!

The second workshop, part of the new Nourish Project at South Machars Community Centre - Whithorn smccwhithorn is coming up later this month - we are all for reducing food wastage at point of preparing and cooking and eating all parts of an edible plant where possible.

It’s certainly interesting to get creative in the kitchen and learn new skills that helps reduce food costs, increases the taste and nutrition of meals and makes for more diverse dishes to enjoy!

Get yourself booked on!
