Today starts Independent Bookshop Week and as a Book Town we are all about supporting local, independent book shops.
We are so thankful to have Westwoods, Howgills Bookshop and Clutterbooks here in Sedbergh and all the other book offers here in town.

It is a wonderful sunny Saturday here in Sedbergh England’s Book Town! Is there anything better than ramble through the hills around us and go for a browse in our bookshops? And don’t forget there is ice cream!

Join us this Saturday in Sedbergh England’s Book Town at the book fair! Lots of secondhand, antiques and collectible books to browse and choose from. Coffee, tea and cake is of course also provided. This makes a great start to a bookish Bank Holiday weekend.

SEDBERGH BOOKTOWN NEWSLETTER February 2026
As you can see we have already booked 16-18 October for Death in the Dales 2026! This will be number 3 and in 2025 we were thrilled to be packed out with crime fiction junkies. The programme for 2026 will be out shortly.
Do you know what Folk Horror is? Well, its really scary fairy stories for grown-ups and it’s a ‘thing’ at the moment. We are planning several events to introduce you all to Horror in the Howgills with the intention of mounting a full festival in Spring 2027.
Any book dealers amongst you might like to know that for the first time in ages there are properties on Main Street which would be ideal for specialist dealers. All of the premises are too small to attract rates which makes the rental much more attractive. Please email [email protected] if you would like more information.
Finally Sedbergh is thinking of a new Booktown encompassing publicity drive.
Sedbergh: Stillness in the Hills. A wellbeing and serenity marketing plan for 2026
Vision: Position Sedbergh as England’s most serene small-town escape — a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and discover a gentle haven between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District.
The idea is wellbeing in body and mind, the mind part being everything to do with writing and reading and consequently Booktown. Again email if you need further info.
