The Street Garden Diary #273

Days like these are why I love being part of this project 😊

We’ve been lucky enough to have 3 new volunteers join our group today! So we all mucked-in together and watered everything by hand - making sure we wasted as little water as possible.

Our onions had started to bolt in the heat, so we decided to harvest them early and get them up to Scarborough Community Fridge + Pantry for sharing with the community. 🧅 They won’t be as big as we hoped but they smelled absolutely delicious.

We planted-out cosmos, aquilegia and our runner beans - the latter received a healthy dose of homemade compost and comfrey tea as preparation.

We’ve also potted-up our cucumbers 🥒 , and I finally brought some chilli plants from home which also got new pots and a place in the greenhouse 🌶️.

Thanks to the generous donation from Kingspan Planet Passionate, we now have a brilliant new tool shed, supplied and expertly installed by local firm S&D SHEDS. 🙏

If you’d like to get involved, we are at The Street every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱

The Street Garden Diary #272

We had another productive Social Saturday in the community garden, and were pleased to welcome Lee, who found us through social media.

The volunteers mowed, strimmed, weeded, topped up the compost with grass clippings and rabbit bedding, cleared and refilled the pond, and potted up basil, Thai basil, and parsley.

We also moved tomatoes into the second greenhouse, planted out more tomatoes, sunflowers and herbs, and prepared for successional growing by sowing dwarf French beans and spring onions ready to follow our potato harvest.

If you’d like to get involved, we are at The Street every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱

What a week! 😊

Yesterday I spent the day in York at a workshop developing ideas for a collaborative regional funding bid. It was exciting to see momentum building around community food projects across North Yorkshire. 🥳

This morning I joined our volunteers in the community garden, potting up greenhouse tomatoes 🍅. Varieties included Chocolate Cherry, Sungold Supersweet and Golden Bumblebee. We reused old compost, rejuvenating it with blood, fish and bone fertiliser along with a few scoops of our homemade compost ♻️.

Our Heinz 1350 plants will be used in a biochar trial over the coming sessions, while the Legend tomatoes will eventually be planted outdoors.

We also added some donated rabbit bedding to the compost pile 🐰 and gave it a good watering.

Despite the damp conditions, we welcomed some great new volunteers to the group. All were experienced gardeners and keen to get involved, which is always encouraging.

Of particular interest was learning about a method that can turn kitchen scraps into compost in just 12 hours! 🤩

After snacks, a drink and a catch-up, we spent some time tidying around the garden before I headed over to Scarborough Library to top up Scarborough Seed Hub.

If you’d like to get involved, we are at The Street every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱

What a great start to the week!

We had a huge surprise this morning. We thought we were going to be chatting with BBC York about all things GROW Scarborough…

Instead, we received the amazing news that we’re finalists in this year’s Make a Difference Awards in the Environmental Group category! 🥳

It’s incredibly humbling to be recognised alongside the other inspiring finalists and the outstanding projects they lead.

To even be nominated is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and support of our volunteers, partners and wider community.

For that, I’m immensely grateful.

GROW Scarborough is nothing without you. Thank you for being part of the journey. 🙂🌱

The Street Garden Diary #270

The drizzle didn’t dampen our Social Saturday in the community garden. 🌦️

The volunteers have taken part in this year’s first snail safari - reducing the population in the garden by a third of a bucket, which we relocated rather than dispatched. 🐌

We’ve also been mindful of our tea-total slimy friends, by installing traps filled with “slug tea” (marmite diluted in water) 🫖 for those not tempted by our usual slug pubs.

Aside from pest control, we spent the morning weeding, sowing skirret, sweet woodruff, root chervil and rocket, and planting out beetroot, spring onion and turnip. 🫜

The volunteers also pegged down the walking onions, allowing the bulbils to take root and continue their characteristic “walk” across the bed.

In the greenhouse we happily noticed our second sowing of runner beans have sprouted!

If you’d like to get involved, we are at The Street every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱

Busy and blustery day in the community garden! 🍃

Our gravel from West Building Supplies Ltd arrived earlier in the week, so we started by laying the ground cover we purchased from Scarborough & District Horticultural Association, before filling the area wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow. 👷

After a lot of hard work, we now have a level base ready for our new tool shed to be erected. A big thank you to Kingspan Planet Passionate for their funding support towards this project.

The volunteers have also been busy planting out sunflowers 🌻, Northeaster French beans, kale and chard.

The cucumbers have been potted up 🥒 and more plant markers have been painted.

Following another delivery this week, we’ve added a protective boundary of wool pellets around some of our more vulnerable crops and given another application of Grazers to help protect them from slugs and snails. 🐌

If you’d like to get involved, we are atThe Streett every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱

The Street Garden Diary #267

More sunshine today in the community garden. 🌤️

The volunteers have been a busy bunch, starting off by giving the grass a mow. The fresh clippings made a brilliant addition of ‘greens’ to our compost pile, allowing us to top it off with the final bags of donated rabbit bedding - creating a great layer of ‘browns’ 🐰

Kenzie has mulched our early potatoes and earthed up our maincrop, and added a nourishing compost mulch around the rhubarb 🪏

Then we planted out leeks and chard, and added a few squashes to our Potager planter, finishing off by sowing some more runner beans 🫘

Lizzy has been clearing around the native hedge, pruning to give an apple tree more space, weeding and feeding with our comfrey tea, and planting out sunflowers and alyssum. 🌻

We’ve watered everything, and given our leafy crops a spray of grazers. We’ve also re-opened our chain of slug pubs for the year 🐌 hopefully the patrons will be too busy to bother our veggies!

If you’d like to get involved, we are at The Street every Thursday and Saturday, from 09:30 - 12:30. 🙂🌱
