Câr-y-Môr has been named *Business of the Year* at the ‘Pride in Our Planet’ Awards!

Led by Katie White OBE MP, the UK’s Minister for Climate and Head Judge for the awards, our working partner Sarah and director Katie represented Câr-y-Môr – a fantastic opportunity for our community benefit society to network in a room filled with other green innovators and influencers.

Supported by Sky, these awards are the first-of-their-kind, created “in response to the doom and gloom that can often dominate climate conversations”.

Câr-y-Môr was selected by judges, including Katie White OBE MP Sam | Sustainable Living Lucie Vaughan, Emma Pinchbeck and Nadeem Perera, from more than 320 entries!

Diolch yn fawr to our local MP Henry Tufnell MP for the nomination and his ongoing support.

He said: “I am incredibly proud of Câr-y-Môr for winning Business of the Year at the inaugural Pride in Our Planet Awards. They are leading the way in sustainable aquaculture, producing delicious seaweed and shellfish while also contributing to local environmental protection efforts.”

It was an honour to fly the flag for Wales at the event, and a humbling experience to be named alongside the likes of Grow to Know .bio and Clover Hogan - llongyfarchiadau to you all!

Meet our Cymuned...

As the first in our series of ‘Meet our Cymuned’ posts happens to coincide with National Beer Day, it seems somewhat appropriate to wish “iechyd da” to our friends 🍻

Both brought up on St Davids peninsula family farms, Mark and Emma Evans of Upper Harglodd are hugely supportive of our community business and we’re so grateful to have them as our partners and neighbours.

The Evans family is passionate about farming sustainably and conserving the stunning Welsh landscape handed down from their forefathers, whilst future-proofing the farm for the next generation.

We’ve been lucky enough to work with them in a number of ways, including: hosting events at the brewery; trialling seaweed biostimulant on the farmland; conducting educational workshops in their children’s school; and supplying regeneratively-grown seaweed for their Cwrw Kelp – a pale gold lager infused with sugar kelp, alongside the brewery’s home grown grain and the farm’s own well water.

The creation of their award-winning beers – which you can pick up in Fortnum & Mason’s no less – is a story of farming diversification at its very best.

And behind that story is a humble farming family supporting its cherished community, protecting its beloved environment, and demonstrating what makes Pembrokeshire so very special. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

A few weeks back our team collected samples from one of our nearby biostimulant trial farms.

That data has now been analysed and our agronomist Tony reported back:

“The first results from the 2026 grassland trials look promising.

At first cut silage, dry matter yield and quality were maintained on seaweed biostimulant treated plots that had received 75% less fertiliser compared to the untreated control plots, that had received standard rates of fertiliser.

We will continue to monitor yield and quality throughout the season, but so far, it’s looking good!”

Câr-y-Môr is enormously grateful to our partnering farmers, who allow us to collect this vital data on real farms, under field conditions.

Researching our regeneratively-grown liquid seaweed in this way ensures it’s well-grounded; the information we collect being relevant to farmers, as it’s based on real-life farming practice and environmental circumstances.

Biostimulant is getting increased attention from the agricultural industry as farmers seek sustainable ways to increase productivity and crop quality; whilst navigating the challenges of climate change and the demand to reduce chemical fertilisers and run-off.

If you know of a farmer who would be keen to find out more, please do point them in the direction of carymor.wales/biostimulant

Why do we use IMTA? Let’s take a deep dive...

Câr-y-Môr uses a farming method on our sea farms called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

One of our founding members, Owen, comes from a fish farming background and often says that it never made sense to him to only farm one species, because of how vulnerable it makes your stock and how intense monoculture can be on the environment.

IMTA on the other hand creates a more circular, 'whole ecosystem' approach which creates several benefits.

The seaweed absorbs dissolved excess nutrients in the water such as nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon, and this in turn creates better water quality for the shellfish to grow, increasing their productivity.

The shellfish filter out particulate waste and also absorb carbon which they sequester in their shells, thus creating clearer waters to increase growth of the seaweeds and 'locking away' carbon from the ocean - helping to combat climate change.

Together they provide a more diverse revenue stream for our community business too, making us more economically resilient and able to grow.

The market for seaweed in the UK is still developing so also having shellfish, which is a more established (and growing) market, ensures we're not putting all our eggs in one basket.

If you’re visiting St Davids, drop by at our land-based HQ, just outside the UK’s smallest city, to learn more about who we are, why and how we operate, and to buy fresh produce brought to shore direct from our sea farms.

You can also see an interactive exhibit of our IMTA "underwater gardens" at the London Science Museum's Future of Food exhibition.
