With the mezzanine structure now in place, our attention is turning to the 4 rooms we have created on the ground floor. Rick is working on our "Corner Shop" which is being fitted out with Shed made display crates and Chris D is installing benches in our Laser room - all from recycled kitchen units. Our "Dust Room" and our "Paint Room" will be next on our list. Machinery is being relocated from our old workshop, and with just the electrics to get sorted, it's all getting quite exciting!

Autumn is upon us and after a remarkably warm summer, it will not be long before wood burners are being brought out of hibernation. And with the price of heating oil and gas already painfully high, here at RMS we are doing our bit to try to help our supporters with the cost of heating. We are releasing our strategic reserve! And for the 3rd year in a row we are holding the cost of our kindling at just £5 for a 5kg bag. So take advantage now whilst our stocks last.

Bags can be collected from The Shed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9.30 and 13.30. If you have mobility issues, we are happy to deliver within Ripon City.

Another lovely monthly lunch at RMS today. After an extremely productive week working on the layout of our new workshop, 19 of us sat down to a well deserved bowl of delicious Chinese chicken and sweet corn soup with prawn crackers. This month, our thanks go to Dawn and everyone who helped before and after the meal. As for the workshop.... it's starting to come together! Watch this page for more updates.

It is with enormous sadness that we report the loss of one of our much respected members, Gerald, who passed away peacefully last week. He had only been with us for just under 2 years, but had become a regular at our Wednesday sessions. A retired farmer who, despite being severely hampered with arthritis, was always keen to help out where he could refurbishing old hand tools. Gerald always wore a smile on his face and his trade-mark cap on his head! Here he is at last year's Christmas party when we managed to part him from his cap for a few hours - although as can be seen, it didn't go far! He will be very much missed and we all send our deepest sympathies to Gerald's family - and especially to Mavis who has been a great supporter of RMS and regular visitor to our social room.

As we all know, 80% of the project gets completed in 20% of the time, the remaining 20% takes 80% of the time. Our new workrooms build out was on track for "completion" some weeks ago - but we still find ourselves fettling those last odds and ends. Fire safety requirements have been a real eye-opener for us - here we can be seen fitting 30minute fire doors, sealing with intumescent sealer and applying intumescent varnish to exposed supporting timbers. And none of this is cheap. Installing wireless smoke detectors, alarms and control panels etc throughout our premises adds another few thousand pounds - even when we do much of the work ourselves! So, just a word of warning to any Shed doing major refurbishment work that involves Building Regulations - do budget for all the extras beyond the obvious structural work.

🪖 You don’t have to knit a tank to become Armed Forces Award winners, but it certainly worked for Ripon Men's Shed.

The 2025 UK Men's Sheds Armed Forces Awards winners created something pretty unforgettable: a full-size wooden framework of a Churchill Mk IV tank, covered with nearly 2,000 hand-knitted squares to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

It caught plenty of attention, but the story went much further than the tank.

Ripon Men’s Shed has strong links with its local Armed Forces community, supporting veterans, the Royal Engineers Association and local organisations, while using making, repairing and remembrance to bring people together.

That combination of creativity, camaraderie and community is exactly what the Armed Forces Award is there to celebrate.

So if your Shed has strong Armed Forces connections, supports veterans, helps mark remembrance or simply provides a place where those who have served can find friendship and belonging, we’d love to hear about it.

If that’s not your Shed’s story, there are plenty of other UK Men’s Sheds Awards categories to explore too.

John M brought in an interesting item of memorabilia the other week - a nameplate of a rather famous train. It was in need of a bit of TLC and thanks to Bob C in our Arts & Craft section, it is now looking the part. John assures us it is a facsimile, but just for the sake of absolute clarity: "it's got nuffin to do with us, guv" if it's an original. And YES, John is a Scot - but we still let him come to The Shed!

We are thrilled to discover that we have been awarded a £1000 donation from Benefact Group's Movement For Good fund.

RMS was just one of 20 lucky charitable groups to receive £1000 on Day 5 of Benefact Group's second draw this year. We would like to thank Benefact Group most sincerely for their most generous support of so many charities across the UK - it really does make a massive difference to small charities such as ourselves who are entirely self-financing and run by a group of dedicated volunteers.

And of course, we would also like to thank all those people who nominated RMS to be a recipient - without your nominations we would not even be in the draw! It is much appreciated.
