Thank you to everyone who turned out today at Ripon Men's Shed to watch the Lloyds Tour of Britain Cycle race as it "flashed" by The Shed. Members and spectators alike took the chance to grab some refreshments and have a look round our new social room and work-in-progress workshop. Thanks also to Morrisons Ripon Community Champion , Angela, for providing biscuits for the morning - your support is much appreciated as always.

A good morning was had by all! And what a great backdrop with the Cathedral peering over the top of Water Skellgate in the previous video post. 😊

Saturday. 5th September, will see the Lloyds Tour Of Britain Cycle Race passing through our lovely city - and, the riders will be going directly past RMS. According to online information, Waterskellgate will be closed between 11.40 and 12.40 to allow the lead vehicles and riders to come through. We are sure there will be lots of folk lining the road outside The Shed, eager to catch a glimpse of this national event.

RMS will be opening its social room for hot drinks with biscuits very kindly donated by Morrisons Ripon Community Champion, Angela. So feel free to call in for a cuppa etc. - donations welcome. And whilst you're waiting for the riders to flash past, why not speak to RMS members about The Shed and what we get up to when we are not watching lycra-clad athletes hurling themselves around at break-neck speeds.

P.S. Our "facilities" will also be available for anyone feeling the urge!.

Clear indications that our workshop build is progressing well as Dave M and Richard C measure the Fire Doors to within the required tight tolerances. Meanwhile, in another part of the wood, Huw narrowly avoided varnishing himself into a corner.🀭

Whilst work progresses on our new workshop, it is good to see that our old workshop is still providing a valuable work place for our members to continue with their own projects as well as shed projects. We are sure Bob C is eager to get what will be the new Arts & Crafts Room clear of machinery, noise and dust, as soon as we can relocate. Hang on in there Bob!πŸ˜€

Just a reminder not to miss what is sure to be a lovely exhibition of pictures taken by local photographers. Pop along to Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall on Saturday- it is bound to brighten what might be a rather wet Saturday.

As part of our development work, over the past few months we have been enhancing the externals of The Shed and now have in place 3 benches and 3 planters which we hope improve the appearance for passers-by. And we invite people to just sit and relax at any time, either, on your own, with friends or even with someone you may not yet know. These are our local "buddy benches" - the simple act of sitting down next to someone can open the door to connecting with that person - and, hopefully, brighten their day. Over 100 buddy benches have been created nationally by UK Men's Sheds. Scan the QR code for more information on the value of buddy benches - you will be amazed at the positive effect they can have.

"Mission Shoulder to Shoulder" has been facilitated in part by the UK Men's Shed Association working with Diageo , the global alcohol beverage producer, as part of their DRINKiQ program which promotes alcohol moderation, especially amongst older men. RMS is grateful for their support.

And kudos to Richard T for getting the screw heads nicely aligned.😊

A shout out for a great new initiative from Ripon Library - a new Men's Book Club. And it's not just for avid bookworms; if you would like to pick up where you left off many years ago - before life became too busy - make a note of the dates shown below in your diary now, and pop along to Claro Lounge at 7pm and get a few pointers. Handy free parking in the town square after 6pm! To help with organisation, the library are asking interested parties to call in at the library to register their interest, or email them at [email protected]. Happy Reading! πŸ“–

This week, RMS left God's Own Country and headed south to Worcester University and ShedFest 2026. Three of our members set off with their Yorkshire-Black Country Dictionaries - Dave "The Snail" Purvis with his Coracle on his back, Ian "Bodger" Botwright with his pole-turning rig and Richard "The Vet" Thomson as support driver and RMS ambassador. Despite the record setting temperatures being experienced on the journey, the lovely a/c setting of Worcester University proved yet again to be a great venue. Informative seminars on making sheds welcoming for veterans, as well as an enlightening talk around drinking responsibly, supported by Diageo, were both well attended.

Thanks go to UK Men's Sheds Association for the obvious effort that they put in each year organising this valuable get together.

It is amazing to think 5 years have passed since we opened our doors and welcomed the first members to our workshop on Waterskellgate. August 2021, just 8 guys turned up, but by the time the first kettle had boiled we instinctively knew the Shed was going to be a success.

From modest beginnings, with just one session a fortnight, we now have over 40 members attending, spread over three sessions each week - and we now own the original property which we were leasing.

In a brief post like this, it is impossible to convey all the support we have received from the people, businesses and general community in Ripon. However we must thank the New Life Church in particular who provided the critical first piece of the jigsaw by leasing the property to us and allowing us to realise our ambition of providing somewhere, for older men especially, to meet and chat in a welcoming and creative space.

Today, as we build our new, larger, workshop, we look forward to welcoming more members and continuing to play a small part in the valuable work done by all the UK Men's Sheds. There are over 1100 Sheds out there!

Here are just a few memories to remind us of what we have achieved so far. Thank you to everyone for your support. We couldn't have done it without you.
