Our "old faithful" workshop is still working hard, providing space for our members who are not directly involved in the build-out of our new workshop. Meanwhile, "in another part of the wood", our build-out crew are busy on our new mezzanine, constructing an office space for our Shed Manager. No sign just yet of the espresso machine - but first-fix wiring is in place!

We are hoping that by the end of September the new workshop will be pretty much up and running. It's certainly been a great team-building exercise and lots of new skills have been learnt (some courtesy of You-Tube and some the hard way!).

Last Saturday saw three of our members joining with Shedders from Starbeck Shed, Harrogate, to enjoy a dry-stone walling taster afternoon at Yate House, near Blubberhouses, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

Thanks go to Andy Gudgeon, Treasurer of the Yorkshire Dry Stone Walling Guild for organising the day. Our members commented on the lovely location and the great company enjoyed on the day.

Now, you can tell this job involved Shedders. At the end of any repair job, there are always some bits and bobs left over that no-one knows where they came from or where they go. 😉

RMS are absolutely blown away by the support we are receiving from Stuart and Katie Ross at The Portly Pig Ripon - not least by the 6-aside football tournament which they have organised with Helen Cotterill-Smith. Helen explained "a key objective of the tournament is to raise awareness of men’s health and wellbeing issues and the help and support that is available for those who may currently feel that they are on their own.”

The tournament will take place at :
📍 Ripon City AFC, Mallorie Park Drive 📅 Sunday 12 July 🕙 10am–2.30pm
who are generously making their facilities available free of charge.

We are pleased to note, Andy's Man Club will also be a beneficiary of the day.

Helen has arranged for the Carabao Cup, League 2 Play Off Cup, and Vertu EFL Trophy to be on display on the day. AND, not to be outdone, the tournament will have it's own Trophy - made by RMS regular, Chris D, who handed it over to Katie earlier this week. Naturally, John L had to help Chris carry the trophy up the hill to The Portly Pig where they were both rewarded with a wee drink!🍻

As we continue with our refurbishment, our thoughts have turned to exactly what equipment we really need - as opposed to what we actually have on shelves, looking impressive but collecting dust!

So, last week, Colin T delivered a couple of car-loads of surplus equipment to Harlow Hill Men's Shed, Harrogate. All the tools were checked before we released them and found to be working. Now, you might be thinking we were just moving tools from one Shed to another - and to an extent you'd be right. But this is a move with a purpose.

John Hart, Chairman of Harlow Shed, explained that a much valued Ukrainian shed member Volodymyr (Left, in picture), with his contacts in Ukraine, ensures that these donations get delivered directly to those who can make use of the equipment in the fight against Russian aggression.

Our own member, Bob M, has himself been out to Ukraine on three occasions this past year, delivering 4x4 vehicles (which may have failed the UK MOT) loaded with aid. The vehicles are either fixed for use or stripped for spare parts, nothing is wasted. Harlow Men's Shed have been involved in shipping 20 vehicles to date.

RMS is pleased to be able to help in a small way and send our very best wishes to Volodymyr and his friends.

Natural light in the upstairs workshop is allowing Bob C to get to grips with his next commission. Hopefully, over the coming months, we will be able to move activity from the upstairs workshop to our new downstairs facility and Bob will be able to start looking at art classes for us mere mortals.

Shed Member, Bob M, recently spoke to the Inner Wheel of Ripon, about his experiences delivering vehicles to Ukraine as part of the Jeeps For Peace initiative. Following the talk, Inner Wheel Benevolent Fund most kindly donated £125 to Jeeps for Peace and an equally generous £125 to RMS. This is greatly appreciated by our members and we thank them for their continuing and generous support, which we will be putting to good use in the refurbishment of our workshop. Bob is currently in Ukraine delivering yet another vehicle to help the war effort. We all wish him a safe retuurn!
