Our youth cooking competition saw our final team create some delicious Cajun spiced tortillas.

Here you can see our cooks getting the balance of spice to get flavour without too much heat.

Eat first with your eyes and second with your mouth is a well rehearsed chef’s phrase and our team hit it off in both ways.

The standards shown in the competition have been incredibly high and all of our teams should be very proud of themselves.

Our next post announces the winners !

Our Youth Shed cooking competition is entering its final week.

Yesterday, we had 2 teams competing for the crown of Rhyl’s best young cooks.

One of the teams cooked chicken egg fried rice , with soy sauce and toasted sesame oil for the authentic flavour!

Our other team cooked pasta in a rich creamy tomato and mascarpone sauce served with slices of garlic bread and a salad garnish.

It’s so great to see essential cooking skills being developed - even better to see the enjoyment they get from working in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, our other youths participated in a debate about the proposed ban on social media for under 16’s. It’s clearly a subject of interest to many young people and parents - we welcome opportunities to talk about subjects that matter to our future generation.

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome Becca Martin, newly elected Plaid Cymru Senedd Member for the Clwyd constituency.

Becca came to see what we offer for children in our Kids Shed - fun, games, activities and some grub of course! A safe place for children to be children after their day at school.

She spoke to children, volunteers and staff and was genuinely interested our charity and the work we do for the people of Rhyl.

We hope you had a safe journey back to Cardiff Becca and enjoyed the home made cheese and onion roll !

The past few days have been dedicated to remembering our two dear fellow shedders, Woody and Lee, who we sadly lost at Christmas time.

We have spent time lovingly tidying and replanting at the BT Community Garden, preparing it for a special memorial day in their honour. Every flower planted and every corner tended felt like a small tribute to two friends who meant so much to so many.

Our staff, volunteers, members, and their families and friends came together to share a lovely BBQ, memories, laughter, and a few tears. The day was made even more special with the unveiling of a lasting tribute to Woody and Lee – something that will help keep their memory alive in the place they loved and helped to shape.

Although they are no longer with us, their presence is still felt throughout the garden and within our community. Their friendship, kindness, humour, and the difference they made to the lives of others will never be forgotten.

Today was not only about saying we miss them, but also about celebrating the lives they lived, the friendships they built, and the legacy they leave behind. Woody and Lee will always hold a special place in our hearts and in the BT Community Garden. ❤️🌻💙

Huge thank you to all who attended. "You'll never walk alone"

Next week’s menu folks!

On Tuesday we are holding a special memorial BBQ at BT Gardens for 2 of our Men’s Shed members who passed away in the last few months and are sadly missed.

We’re keeping it simple for kids and youth shed as our kitchen is being used for the next round of our cooking competition.

We hope you enjoy.

Round 2 of our youth cooking competition saw another excellent meal prepared by ‘The Two Rolling Pins’ team - chicken pasta bake with creamy tomato sauce, veg and cheese.

In the competition, teams have to create a savoury meal for 4 people (using at least 2 vegetables) in an hour. They have to create a meal plan, listing ingredients up to a maximum budget of £15 - it’s all about developing life skills, having fun and some healthy competition!

Rounds 3 and 4 next week - final results to be announced shortly afterwards.

Our Kids Shed participants have had a lovely week exploring a variety of Father’s Day and “someone special” crafts, including tissue paper badges, shirt cards, personalised cards, and colouring pages. Alongside their creative activities, they enjoyed karaoke, outdoor games whenever the weather allowed, and plenty of fun with friends.

We were also delighted to welcome our PCSOs and Police Officers back for another visit. They showed great interest in the fantastic opportunities that Brighter Futures offers for our children and young people, and it was wonderful to see them engaging with the group once again.

Meanwhile, Youth Shed has kicked off its exciting cooking competition! With two challenges completed and two still to come, this has been a brilliant opportunity for young people to develop and showcase their kitchen skills.

Following the competition activities, our young people visited the workshop to create personalised engraved keychains for Father’s Day or someone special in their lives. To round off the final Youth Shed session of the week, everyone enjoyed a game of kickball on the turf alongside our PCSOs and Police officer.

A fantastic week filled with creativity, learning, teamwork, and fun!

Our roast dinner today came with a choice of turkey, ham or beef.

With roasties, honeyed parsnips, carrots, Yorkshire pudding, red cabbage, creamed leeks asparagus and peas, stuffing and gravy, all for £1, this is the bargain of the week/month/year !

And for some, it was even FREE! Anyone participating with our postcode gardener in our ‘sow and grow’ event were treated to lunch for ‘nada’, ‘free’, ‘no charge’ .

We’re a friendly bunch, a place where everyone feels valued, a place where people from all walks of life feel welcome.

As the cook, I share food and love, but as a group of people we share community and connection.

Why not be brave and take the first step in re-connecting !

Message us to come and visit for a look at what we have to offer.

What a fantastic start to our youth cooking competition!

The ‘fam’ made a chilli with rice (from scratch) and garlic bread. With loads of vegetables and pulses, this is a great way to get your ‘five a day’ in a simple and tasty way !

Our teams will be judged by competing teams, as well as being marked for teamwork, hygiene and cleaning.

We can’t wait to see how our other teams do this week and next.

Sharing food, sharing love ❤️
