Sunday's event at the 2026 Urdd on Anglesey, an event we are sponsoring for 6 years. Invites will go out for a concert in 2027-8 at Rhyl Music Club. Leisa has already sung in Rhyl and participated in a special teaching day at the Club with Sophia Rahman . We rated her highly.

Today at the Beaumaris Festival - Oliver Pearce, cello, with Sophia Rahman, piano. Sophia is a significant professional musician and she has taken an interest in Oliver's cello playing for some time. So what about today? I feel quite overwhelmed with how superb the mornin g concert was. It contained two major works - Debussy and Shostakovich and the standard was far higher than I had anticipated. The Club has been supporting Oliver for some years and seen his progression.
Oliver will appear at the Conwy Festiuval in July and then at Christmas with our Club playing Haydn's first cello concerto with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra.
Tomorrow at Beaumaris at 3 pm we have another of our own musicians in Thea Ormrod. Last Christmas she gave us the Hummel trumpet concerto with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra to rapturous acclaim. Anthony Hose has been supportive of our Club and allowed these wonderful opportunities - thanks to him

Our own season is done and we begin again in late September but before that we want to tell you about 3 Festivals that you might wish to support
In mid May it is Whittington near Ellesmere/Oswestry where Sophia Rahman has arranged concerts
Shortly after that you can visit Beaumaris. Our own Young Musicians, Oliver Pearce and Thea Ormrod will be performing
Then in July its the turn of Conwy. the 2022 photo shoows the interior but the church and churchyard are enclosed in a miraculous quiet space inside a wonderful walled town

Erin Rossington, a soprano with a room-filling voice, is accompanied by Ellis Thomas. Both are from North Wales and remember - Wales is the land of song.

I first saw/heard young pianist Jacky Zhang on BBC Young musician when he was about 11. Then again recently when he was runner up in the Concerto final. I immediately booked him and that was perhaps the booking decision of the season. Stunning playing with great light and shade in the Chopin Preludes followed by Brahms 3rd Sonata. An encore of Liszt's Mazeppa which is the story by Victor Hugo of an over amorous Ivan Mazepa who is tied, naked, to his horse and chased from Poland back to Ukraine. Ukraine have re-adopted Mazepa in their current struggle. I was, at age 17, about to take my A levels but at 17 Jacky is well on with his Master's degree so he's not just a piano performer. I advise any music lover to go hear him play.

As well as string quartet we had piano solos, piano duos, cello and violin, cello and piano (Debussy Sonata), trumpet and piano, clarinet, trumpet and piano (Piazzolla's Libertango). The range of ability across all these instruments gave us an unforgettable evening. ( Thea on winning the Brass section at the Gregynog Festival )

A Young Musicians evening with such a variety of music. 3 local musicians and a further 4 from N W England and all of them attend the Junior Royal Northern College of Music on Saturdays. The RNCM is doing an impressive job! 3 members of the string quartet that played a complete Beethoven Quartet are members of the National Youth Orchestra. Big emphasis on Young Musicians again this season and audiences entranced. Our first was in a concert with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra was larger than usual because the Hummel Trumpet Concerto requires more players - so we were able to have a Beethoven Symphony as well (4th). The Hummel was startlingly impressive. Alison Balsom played this concerto at Last Night of the Proms in September as her signing off concert but we had a 14 year old trumpeter at the start of her career. Thea Ormrod lives in N Wales and has played for us several times. A rendition that was almost alarming in its technical and musical competence. Nice one, Thea!

I could write about a superb concert this week but instead prefer to mention the class given by cellist Robert Cohen with Dina Duisen accompanying Seren Harris, a young and local violinist. In case you haven't come across him, Robert Cohen has been a performer worldwide as well as a recognised teacher. He himself was taught by William Pleeth, Jacqueline du Pre and Rostropovich. I asked him to give a public class to Seren concentrating on the 1st Bach Violin Concerto. I know great teaching when I see/hear it having been a teacher all my life but this was on another level. Areas under discussionb were a very detailed view of bow technique, positioning of the body and violin to enable less wrist movement but above all else how to think about how to present and communicate one's ideas with an audience. All musicians refer back to their teachers and Seren now has a lasting resource available to her. As a Club we give many opportunities to young, school age musicians and if yuo would like to hear some of them here are 2 upcoming concerts. On December 10th you can hear Thea Ormrod in the Hummel Trumpet Concerto with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra (yes - the same concerto played by Alison Balsom at the Last Night of the Proms) Then on February 25th we have Thea and Moli Ormrod with Phoebe Xu followed by Oliver Pearce and friends from Junior RNCM. Oliver played in the Proms National Youth Orchestra concert in August
