Manchester Lions 🦁 defeat Pontefract Sri Lankans by 7 wickets

A fantastic day of cricket unfolded at Streethouse Cricket Club on 2nd August 2026, as Manchester Lions chased down a competitive target to secure a convincing 7-wicket victory over Pontefract Sri Lankans.

Winning the toss, Pontefract Sri Lankans elected to bat first and posted a respectable 210 all out in 38.2 overs. The innings was anchored by Dineth Fernando, who scored a patient 58 (82), while Roshan De Zoysa played an explosive knock of 45 (25) and Shanaka Perera added a valuable 44 (46) to give the hosts a competitive total.

Manchester Lions responded with confidence and composure. Ramesh Perera led the chase brilliantly with a match-winning 77 (88), well supported by Tenushka Nanayakkara with 54 (41) and Deemantha Bandara, who contributed a quick 45 (42). The visitors reached 214/3 in just 30.5 overs, sealing victory with more than eight overs to spare.

Earlier, Manchester Lions' bowlers laid the platform for victory. Ramesh Perera starred with the ball, claiming 3/22, while Chathura Lakruwan (2/35) and Tenushka Nanayakkara (2/36) provided excellent support to restrict Pontefract Sri Lankans.

For Pontefract Sri Lankans, Lahiru Dilshan Pathirana (1/38) and Senushka Fernando (1/44) picked up wickets during the chase, but Manchester Lions maintained control throughout to complete a deserved victory.

A disciplined bowling display followed by a composed run chase saw Pontefract Sri Lankans secure their 1st victory in the Lankan Premier League (UK) Season 2026.

After electing to bat, Lankan Lions Yorkshire posted 157 all out in 36.3 overs. Despite determined knocks from Kasun Wijesinghe (38) and Dushantha Sangapala (33), the Pontefract bowling attack kept the scoring under control.

🔥 Lahiru Dilshan Pathirana starred with the ball, claiming 4/21 from his 8 overs, while Tharusha Tilakarathne (2/37) and Tharindu Madushan (1/9) provided excellent support.

Chasing 158, Dineth Fernando anchored the innings with a superb 77 off 95 balls, finding valuable support from Tharusha Tilakarathne (36)* as Pontefract reached 158/6 in 31.1 overs to seal a comfortable win.

Manchester Lions secured a convincing 34-run victory over Pontefract Sri Lankans in a competitive encounter at Lymm Oughtrington Park Cricket Club.

Batting first, Manchester Lions posted 136 all out in 36.4 overs. Dinusha Jayasekara led the way with 26 runs, while Deemantha Bandara added a valuable 22 and Sanka MC contributed 20 runs to help build a defendable total.

Pontefract Sri Lankans fought hard in reply but were bowled out for 102 in 29 overs. Deepal Dissanayaka top-scored with 24 runs, supported by Pubudu Dasanayake (19) and Kokila Gomaz (13).

The Lions' bowlers proved decisive, with Marlyn Gamage delivering a match-winning spell of 3 wickets for just 12 runs from 8 overs, including 3 maidens. Dinusha Jayasekara also impressed with 3 wickets, while Janaka Malalagama chipped in with 2 crucial scalps.

For Pontefract Sri Lankans, Lahiru Dilshan Pathirana claimed 3 wickets, while Gayan Pathirathna and Dineth Fernando bowled with excellent control.
