Happy International Ghost Shark Day! 👻🦈

Ghost sharks are also known as spookfish or chimaera (after a mythical monstrous fire-breathing hybrid composed of parts from other animals!). So, it’s fitting we celebrate them just before Halloween.

These strange-looking relatives of sharks are usually found in the deeper parts of our ocean, meaning they're rarely seen, hard to study, and absolutely fascinating. Worldwide there are around 50 species of chimaera. In UK and Irish waters 8 species have been recorded.

You can now take part in the Great Eggcase Hunt from the comfort of your own home, thanks to our newly developed Community Verification Platform!

The Community Verification Platform can be accessed using the online Recording Hub (recording.sharktrust.org) or in the Shark Trust App!

On this new platform, you can help check the location, species, and number of eggcases for records submitted by other Great Eggcase Hunt users. But don’t worry, it’s not all on you - records aren’t approved until multiple people agree on the same ID. And, if you’re not sure, you can always skip the record.

Using the Community Verification Platform will also help you level up your ID skills, with links to the Great Eggcase Hunt resources to help you along the way, as well as experience points up for grabs (including bonuses for correct identifications). Let’s see who can make it to the top of the leaderboard!

Meet Harriet, our data extraordinaire! She sees every single record you submit to our citizen science projects. Now, each month, she’ll be picking a favourite to share with you.

This month features a lovely Nursehound, spotted by Kaleb Atherton while diving in Tenby and submitted to Shark Log.

Did you know? Nursehounds have quite a few names to choose from! They are also often called: Greater-Spotted Catshark, Greater-Spotted Dogfish and Bull Huss.

Thank you, Kaleb, and everyone who shares their discoveries with us. From shark sightings to eggcase finds, your records help us learn more about sharks, skates and rays.

Tom "The Blowfish" Hird is the world's only Heavy Metal Marine Biologist. He is also the presenter of Netflix's All the Sharks

This November, he’ll join us at For the Love of Sharks 2026 to share his experiences as the host of the hugely popular Netflix show and diving with sharks and rays around the world.

Join Blowfish, Ross Noble, Kaush Subramaniam and the Shark Trust team for an evening celebrating sharks, conservation and the people working to secure their future.

We’ll also reveal the winners of Shark Photographer of the Year 2026 live on the night.

In early October, we headed to Ovingdean beach in West Sussex for a Great Eggcase Hunt in the autumn sunshine.

We joined forces with Sussex Wildlife Trust, along with The Rock Pool Project who were running a bioblitz alongside us.

With 41 of us on the lookout during the two-hour event, we found an incredible 249 eggcases from Smallspotted Catsharks, Undulate Skate, Thornback Skate, Spotted Skate and Blonde Skate!

This Great Eggcase Hunt was hosted as part of Rays of Tope - a three-year project led by University of Plymouth and funded throughNatural England's Species Recovery Programme.
