BMABA CIC

BMABA CIC The British Martial Arts & Boxing Association (BMABA) is a multi-award winning independent martial arts association.

BMABA CIC is the multi-award-winning, not-for-profit home of 100K+ UK martial artists, making the sector safer and more inclusive while helping clubs grow, lead and change lives. The association promotes participation, effects social change through our charitable foundation and effectively regulates the instruction of martial arts through all of our BMABA registered coaches, clubs and senseis. For

coaches and clubs, our work extends far beyond just guiding best practice. We represent your club and student’s views on a national platform, provide invaluable resources and tools, provision insurance and licensing – and so much more – all under one inclusive, affordable membership package. Our organisation is a multi-award winning, independent, politics free body that has risen from just £20 of capital in 2012 to the now dominate position of a substantial, influential disruptor in the UK martial arts sector. Our Fighting Chance Charitable Foundation uses martial arts to tackle social inequality, with specific programs tackling knife crime, childhood poverty, violence against women and girls and much more.

We've been collecting feedback from alot of clubs over the past few months, and one of the first few things we intend to release now we're 27001:2022 'badged' is a new integrated, fully unified Hub.

As MyBMABA has grown with our membership, we appreciate its become a bit disjointed and at times, difficult, to quickly update your team, access documents and so forth.

Our solution is a new integrated portal, within MyBMABA, that remove the clutter, confusion and multiple menus - just a simple, unified place to see and manage your membership, your team and any insurances.

We'll be BETA testing this with the Roadmap community (in MyBMABA) in the next couple of weeks, and hoping to roll it out in September. We think it could help cut down admin time (and confusion!) by a huge amount, so we're very excited to share it with you as a community when its ready.

BMABA has signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

We're incredibly proud to share that BMABA is now a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant: our public pledge that those who serve, and those who have served, are treated fairly and supported properly in everything we do.

Martial arts has always had a special relationship with the Forces community, and we already support a huge number of serving personnel and veterans across our membership, including discounted membership and insurance for current Armed Forces members and all veterans.

Signing the Covenant is about going further. Serving personnel will soon benefit from a free deployment pause on their membership, meaning anyone deployed in service of their country can step away, serve, and come home to an active membership that hasn't lost them a single day, even beyond the usual twelve-month term. Behind the scenes, we're building a veteran-trained, veteran-ready team so that support for the Forces community runs through everything we do.

And this September we launch Reboot, our new community programme helping martial arts clubs become a welcoming sanctuary for veterans and those returning from service, with trauma-informed coaching embedded in how they work.

We'll also shortly begin working towards the Armed Forces Covenant's Employer Recognition Scheme, because this commitment applies to our own team too.

To those who serve, and those who have served: thank you. We're proud to stand with you. 🥋

🏆 A UK first for martial arts.

BMABA is the first, and to the best of our knowledge the only, UK martial arts and combat sports association to hold both ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 27001:2022 certification under UKAS accreditation. Our ISO 27001 award was confirmed this month by the British Assessment Bureau, achieved with zero non-conformities.

So what do they actually do?

ISO 9001, which we've held since May last year, certifies the quality of how we run the association: consistent, professional, properly managed services for every instructor, club and member we support.

ISO 27001 certifies how we protect information: the systems we run and the data you trust us with as a club, from your member records and licensing through to safeguarding information.

And that matters more than ever with what's coming. As our roadmap has trailed, the big 4.0.0 update to our club management platform will introduce GoCardless direct debit collection for clubs, alongside a new leads module in the club CRM, our AI-powered lesson planner and plenty more. Everything behind them now sits on an independently certified foundation.

Six months from a standing start in February, alongside the day job. We could not be prouder of our team.

And the development work we held back while the audit completed? Unlocked. Watch this space 👀

Our developers are now deep into testing of a GoCardless Direct Debit integration for the BMABA CRM (Club Manager).

Stripe has been completely designed to make for a seamless 'direct debit like' experience, if you prefer card payments, but we know so many of you want to fire out a mandate when someone joins the club, and then take care of effortlessly setting the D/D to run at whatever the prevailing rate is, and GoCardless are one of the cleanest experiences for this.

Development on this component is complex and multi-layered, but the team have the basics in place already, and will continue to build this over the coming weeks.

We'll keep the community updated on when native Direct Debit collections are a core available part of the infastructure.

In the interim, manual payments and Stripe (which can handle direct debits as well as card payments, Google / Apple Pay and Link payments) remain active.

🥋 IT'S HERE. The Instructor (& Cadet) Training Pathway (ITP) is now live.

One of the most requested things we've ever built.

For years, martial arts has had no consistent, structured route from assistant to instructor. Talented assistants and young leaders were developed on goodwill and instinct, with nothing recorded and no recognised standard at the end of it.

The ITP changes that. 👇
✅ A defensible national standard, indexed and quality-assured
✅ Staged progression with a full evidence trail behind every completion
✅ Integrated CPD, from safeguarding to coaching young people
✅ A safeguarding-first cadet route for young leaders

And the bit we're proudest of: it's club-driven. We set the minimum standard. You build on it. Raise the bar with tougher in-house requirements, add your own CPD, competitions, events and milestones, and track it all in one professional, indexed system.

A national standard. Your club's programme. Driven by you, not by us. The next generation of instructors is already in your room. The ITP gives them the road. 🛣️

We'll be rolling out our new Lead Management and Booking extension for BMABA CRM next week!

BMABA Trials will be launching in BETA. Its a free tool built right into your account that lets you take free taster bookings through your own branded page and manage every new enquiry in one place, from first contact all the way to joining. Waiting lists for full classes, secure messaging with prospects, simple one-click follow-ups, and a clear view of where your leads are coming from are all built in. Best of all, when you convert a lead to a student, they'll go straight into BMABA CRM with all their details automatically filled.

For most clubs, getting people interested is not the hard part; turning that interest into members is, and this is designed to make that far easier, without the price tag of the commercial tools out there.

It is rolling out in beta so we can gather your feedback. Keep an eye on the Roadmap Community Board in MyBMABA for the link!

We're just running the final pre-flight checks before we launch the long-awaited 'ITP' (Instructor Training Programme) - a system that will make it effective and easy for clubs to run in-house training of assistant instructors.

It will include both a Cadet (under 18) pathway, with awards of Bronze, Silver and Gold, as well as an Adult Pathway for instructor training.

In both cases, BMABA set a minimum baseline of CPD requirements across areas like shadowing, assisting, development and so forth, and you as a club can then increase the base-line requirement, and integrate any in house qualifications, training or requirements.

This provides your assistant instructors with an ISO9001:2015 regulated place to log training and ultimately gain instructorship through your organisation, whilst giving you and your management team a simple way to manage progress and ultimately progress assistants to instructor status when they're ready.

The whole programme, certification and use of the platform is free for all existing clubs and assistant instructors!

We'll post a further update later today in MyBMABA.

We're being asked by lots of clubs whether they should remain open during the current hot weather. ☀️

As with most things, the answer is: it depends.

If you're training in a venue that is already extremely hot, where mats and equipment are becoming uncomfortable to use, and you're expecting a room full of children who may already be tired, dehydrated, or struggling to regulate their temperature, it may be sensible to consider postponing, adapting, or cancelling sessions.

Conversely, if you're fortunate enough to have a well-ventilated or air-conditioned facility, and you take appropriate steps to account for hydration, rest periods, and the needs of your students, training may still be entirely appropriate.

Ultimately, the key question is whether the environment and activity remain safe for those taking part.

In the event of an incident, insurers will typically ask the same questions regardless of provider: Was the activity reasonably safe? Would 'the prudent uninsured' have made the same decision? Were appropriate steps taken to manage foreseeable risks?

Every club, venue, and community is different. As an organisation, we're leaving the decision to individual instructors, who are best placed to assess local conditions and the needs of their students.

If you do decide to cancel or modify a session, how you compensate students is entirely up to your club. Some instructors may choose to run an alternative activity, invite students to attend another session, extend a future class, offer account credit, or simply make a decision based on what works best for their members. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Please err on the side of caution, particularly where children, older adults, or anyone with additional health considerations may be affected. A modified session, shorter class, or cancelled lesson is always preferable to an avoidable medical emergency.

Finally, this is a good opportunity to refresh yourself on the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can often be managed with prompt action, cooling, and hydration. Heat stroke, however, is a medical emergency requiring immediate assistance. Ensuring all coaches and volunteers can recognise the difference is an important part of keeping students safe. Our new First Aid CPD within MyBMABA includes guidance on recognising and responding to both conditions.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and look after your students. ☀️
