What a fantastic turnout we had for Penwortham Gala, everyone entered into the spirit of our theme of Little People BIG DREAMS. We had Queen Elizabeth, Florence Nightingale, Bob Dylan, Amelia Earhart, David Attenborough, Emmeline Pankhurst, William Shakespeare, David Bowie, Taylor Swift, Tim Peake, Jane Goodall, Beatrix Potter, Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Ed Sheeran, Iris Apfel, Jane Austen, Elton John, Dolly Parton, John Lennon, Harry Kane, Ronaldo to name but a few. Even Harry Styles joined us before dashing back to Wembley for his gig tonight 😂

A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped us get the wagon ready this morning and helped dismantle it afterwards, your support is very much appreciated 😊 Thank you also to our leaflet distributors - you handed out over 200 leaflets 🤩

The final thank you goes to James for supplying the wagon and driving us, this amazing experience wouldn’t be possible without your continued support 😊

Some of our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders came together tonight for a session of Balsam Bashing with . Boy did the children work hard! There was lots of balsam pulled from the ground and then crushed by jumping up and down on it! I think you could tell from how the children looked when they went home that they’d had fun 🤩 I think everyone went home with some mud on them 😂

Well done to everyone for their efforts tonight 👏👏

For the final time of Volunteers’ Week I’d like to acknowledge all the adults who voluntarily give up their time to support the children in our Scout Group. Without them there would be no 5th Penwortham, children wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience all the different activities we provide each week. If our posts have made you want to get involved then please contact us ⚜️

For the last day of Volunteers’ Week I’d like to introduce myself, Sarah. I’ve been a volunteer with 5th Penwortham since 2008 when I started as Beaver Section Leader and then many years later became Group Lead Volunteer.

1. What first inspired you to get involved with our Scout Group? ⛺
My son Oliver was in Beavers and the Group wanted parent helpers, I ended up volunteering as I’m no good at saying no 🤦‍♀️

2. What is the most rewarding part about volunteering with the scouts?
Seeing the children develop in confidence and become more independent.

3. If you could describe our volunteering team in just three words, what would they be?
Committed, enthusiastic and selfless.

4. What is your absolute favourite memory from a scout camp or activity so far? 🪵🔥
Watching everyone having fun and joining in with activities and the fantastic camaraderie between everyone.

5. What’s a skill you’ve learned (or rediscovered!) since volunteering with us?
I can organise anything whether it’s a fundraising event or camp, I’m in my element organising!

6. Who is the funniest or most inspiring character you’ve met during your time in scouting?
There’s too many to mention, there’s been lots of adults and children over the years who have inspired me and made a lasting impression.

7. How do you think volunteering with the scouts has impacted your own life or career?
I believe in myself more and know I’m capable of anything I put my mind to. Scouting gives me a sense of achievement.

8. What would you say to a parent or community member who is thinking about volunteering but isn’t quite sure yet? 🤔
Do it, don’t use the excuse of not having the time - it’s only an hour a week 😉

9. What’s one scout tradition or game that you love just as much as the youth do?
Campfire and the songs, seeing everyone joining in and having fun.

10. Be honest: are you a master fire-lighter, a tent-pitching guru, or the champion of the camp kitchen? What’s your scout superpower?
It’s got to be the ability to multi task and watch everything come together. There’s nothing more satisfying than organising a camp for 200 people and watching everyone leave with a smile on their face 😊.

Dropping my kids off at camp and being gutted I wasn’t going too.

2. What is the most rewarding part about volunteering with the scouts?

3. If you could describe our volunteering team in just three words, what would they be?

Crazy, diverse and dedicated

4. What is your absolute favourite memory from a scout camp or activity so far? 🪵🔥

County Rally Silent Disco

Patience

6. Who is the funniest or most inspiring character you’ve met during your time in scouting?

Oliver Gunning his enthusiasm is infectious and brings out the inner child in everybody

7. How do you think volunteering with the scouts has impacted your own life or career?

Broadened my horizons and introduced me to a diverse community of young people that I wouldn’t have usually had the chance to meet. Along with helping me rediscover my love of the outdoors.

8. What would you say to a parent or community member who is thinking about volunteering but isn’t quite sure yet? 🤔

Give it a try you might surprise yourself

9. What’s one scout tradition or game that you love just as much as the youth do?

Dodgeball

10. Be honest: are you a master fire-lighter, a tent-pitching guru, or the champion of the camp kitchen? What’s your scout superpower?

1. What first inspired you to get involved with our Scout Group? ⛺

Being a Beaver, cub and half way through scouts at 5th Penwortham as a child and taking time out, made me miss the fun and adventure.

2. What is the most rewarding part about volunteering with the scouts?

Seeing all the children having fun and achieving their skills/goals. Also been given the opportunity to do training for various things to do with scouting as a leader.

3. If you could describe our volunteering team in just three words, what would they be?

Committed, Helpful, Bonkers

4. What is your absolute favourite memory from a scout camp or activity so far? 🪵🔥

They are all good memories when you are on camp.

5. What’s a skill you’ve learned (or rediscovered!) since volunteering with us?

Putting up different type tents and putting them away again.

6. Who is the funniest or most inspiring character you’ve met during your time in scouting?

Everyone involved, everyone is different in their characters.

7. How do you think volunteering with the scouts has impacted your own life or career?

It has helped me with my confidence in so many ways. Meeting new people in new places. Always like to help others if I can when needed.

8. What would you say to a parent or community member who is thinking about volunteering but isn’t quite sure yet? 🤔

Give it ago. It is so rewarding to see all the children having fun and there is different challenges you can take part in if you want to go one step further.

9. What’s one scout tradition or game that you love just as much as the youth do?

The different scout songs that stick over the years.

10. Be honest: are you a master fire-lighter, a tent-pitching guru, or the champion of the camp kitchen? What’s your scout superpower?

I wouldn’t say I have one.
